Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 5, Part 1 (The Scramble for Control of the Oil Fields)

Day 4's threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13, Part 14, Part 15, Part 16

Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

I see your threads and they get an instant rec (did this with Egypt too, but I have lacked sleep tonight trying to follow this, I really think Libya is a much bigger deal because the bloodshed is enormous, we're talking about hitting the 500 confirmed mark within a day or so but I know it's much much higher).

Libya unrest: UK continues to assess threat to Britons

The UK will continue to assess the threat to British nationals in Libya and the need for evacuations, the foreign secretary has said.

...

BP, which is carrying out oil and gas exploration in Libya, has 140 staff - 40 expatriates and 100 foreign nationals - in the country. The company is preparing to evacuate families and non-essential staff over the next two days.

...

Responding to criticism over Britain's commercial interests with the country, Libyan-British Business Council chairman Lord Trefgarne said trade with the UK was not "a reward for good behaviour".

"We are a great trading nation, we trade with a great many nations around the world, many of whom we have sharp disagreements (with)," he said.

No sooner did they guy finish talking than Qaddaffi's thugs broke into his home, beat him up and dragged him out the house BY HIS BEARD. Some brave young men managed to free him a few hours later.

It means "Rise Up and OVERTHROW Qaddafi". The same thing as "Illegitimate"

Libya's Gaddafi could find refuge in Israel
Monday, February 21, 2011 | Ryan Jones

...

The older of the two interviewees, Guita Brown, said she is Gaddafi’s second cousin (Brown’s grandmother was the sister of Gaddafi’s grandmother). The younger of the two women, Rachel Saada, granddaughter of Brown, explained in more detail:
“The story goes that Gaddafi’s grandmother, herself a Jewess, was married to a Jewish man at first. But he treated her badly, so she ran away and married a Muslim sheikh. Their child was the mother of Gaddafi.”

...

If the story told by Brown and Saada is true, Gaddafi is entitled to immigrate to Israel as a Jew under Israel’s Law of Return. Even if every other country on earth refused him entry, Israel would be obligated by its own laws to take Gaddafi in.

At the time of the interview, the anchor quipped, “I am sure there is some local authority in Israel that would be pleased to have a former president on its staff.”

60. Norway condemns violence in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen
http://www.regjeringen.no/en/dep/ud/press/news/2011/-norway-condemns-violence-in-libya-bahra.html?id=633937

“I condemn the use of violence against peaceful protesters in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Mr Støre is concerned about the situation in these countries and urges the authorities to refrain from violence, respect the right to freedom of expression and allow peaceful demonstrations.

“The protests in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen are an expression of the people’s desire for more participatory democracy. The authorities must respect fundamental human rights such as political, economic and social rights. It is now vital that all parties do their utmost to foster peaceful dialogue on reforms,” said the Foreign Minister.

During the past few days, there have been massive demonstrations in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen. A number of people are reported to have been killed, and many are said to have been arrested in connection with the demonstrations.

“The protesters are calling for greater political freedom. Freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are fundamental human rights and are prerequisites for democratic development. Norway supports the people’s desire to live in a society where political and social rights are safeguarded,” said Mr Støre.

Pretty weak stuff, but i'm surprised they said anything at all. What can you expect from a country who's national oil corporation has done business with the Ghadaffi regime for ages? I'm emberrassed to be from a European country today.

London university halts Libya-funded program
Feb 21, 2011 7:33 AM GMT-0600
By The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — The London School of Economics says it has suspended a study program partly funded by a charity run by the son of Moammar Gadhafi after the "distressing" violence in Libya over the past few days.

The university says that in 2009 it accepted a gift of 1.5 million pounds (2.4 million) from the Gadhafi International Charity and Development Foundation, which is chaired by the Libyan leader's son, Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, an LSE graduate.

The school said the money was used to fund a North African research program, which has now been suspended.

The LSE also said it was reconsidering other links with Libya in light of the "highly distressing" violence there.
