Libyan Revolution Tweets, Day 5, Part 2 (The Scramble for Control of the Oil Fields)

Previous Day 5 threads: Part 1

Occasionally, since the people I follow cover Bahrain, Yemen and Jordan also, if I see something really important about those countries, I'll post it here but I plan to mostly focus on Libya because they're having the hardest time getting the word out and Qaddafi's brutality is more systematic and I believe the scale exceeds the brutality in the other country.

They're also the country with the most propagandists on Twitter.

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, Qaddafi has brought in thousands of mercenaries from Pakistan, Bangladesh and other North African coutries, specifically Chad. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=103697256377254&oid=179449562095105 (Youtube link here) Their confessions are that they've been offered between $12,000 - $30,000 each.

Un homme s'immole par le feu à Paris
Un homme d'une quarantaine d'années s'est immolé par le feu devant le palais de Justice de Paris. Il a été secouru par les pompiers.

http://www.metrofrance.com/_internal/gxml!0/r0dc21o2f3vste5s7ezej9x3a10rp3w$rde9n2r0008281xwk63c1an1lhvenrb.jpeg

Report: Libya air force bombs protesters heading for army base
Protesters take over office of two state-run satellite news channels, set central government building ablaze, as violence escalates on 7th day of protests.

By News Agencies

Al-Jazeera reported Monday that the Libyan air force has bombed protesters who were on their way to an army base, according to eyewitness testimony.

The protesters were reportedly heading to the army base to obtain ammunition, but witnesses said the air force bombed the demonstrators before they could get there.

Clashes between protesters and security forces escalated on Monday and have spread to Tripoli, after Muammar Gadhafi's son went on state television to proclaim that his father remained in charge with the army's backing and would fight until "the last man, the last woman, the last bullet."

...

Even as Seif al-Islam Gadhafi spoke Sunday night, clashes were raging in and around Tripoli's central Green Square, lasting until dawn Monday, witnesses said. They reported snipers opening fire on crowds trying to seize the square, and Gadhafi supporters speeding through in vehicles, shooting and running over protesters. Early Monday, protesters took over the office of two of the multiple state-run satellite news channels, witnesses said.

EU Says It Can’t Intervene in Libya, Weighs Regional Aid, Trade
By Leon Mangasarian - Feb 21, 2011 5:11 AM GMT-0600

European Union foreign ministers said the 27-nation bloc cannot intervene in Libya and focused instead on hammering out trade and aid measures to help crisis- stricken North Africa.

“It’s not our job to change the leader of Libya,” Finland’s Alexander Stubb told reporters before a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels today. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Europe shouldn’t interfere,” expressing alarm over what he said was “the self-proclamation of the so- called Islamic emirate of Benghazi.”

“Would you imagine to have an Islamic Arab emirate at the borders of Europe?” Frattini said. “This would be a really serious threat.”

Violence in Libya, Africa’s biggest holder of crude-oil reserves, has centered on the east of the country, including the city of Benghazi, and follows popular protests that toppled autocratic rulers of Tunisia and Egypt. Unrest has also flared in Yemen, Djibouti and Bahrain as governments have sought to crack down on calls for reform.

* Swiss government monitoring Libya, Bahrain closely * "Several dozens of million" francs seized from ex-leaders

ZURICH Feb 21 (Reuters) - The Swiss government has seized "several dozens of millions" francs held in Swiss banks by the deposed presidents of Egypt and Tunisia, but has not frozen assets of any current leaders in North Africa and the Gulf, officials said on Monday.

The government is monitoring unrest in Libya, Bahrain and other states in the region, said government spokesman Andrea Simonazzi.

"The government is following the situation very closely, but no decisions have been taken (on freezing further assets). The next government session is on Wednesday," he said.

"When the government decides to freeze assets, it is the work of the banks to identify these assets and announce them to the justice department so we know what they have found."

Two Libyan fighter jets arrive in Malta

Two Libyan Air Force Mirage jet fighters have arrived in Malta and landed at MIA.

Their arrival was totally unexpected and it is not known if the pilots are defecting. Sources said that the pilots had initially asked for emergency clearance to land and for refuelling.

...

Such was the haste of their departure from Libya, that only one of the passengers was carrying a passport. The passengers claimed they are French.

Immigration police are checking the identities of the passengers while holding them at the airport.

Two Libyan fighter jets landed unexpectedly in Malta on Monday, witnesses told Reuters.

Local newspaper reporters saw the single-seater Mirage jets land at Malta's international airport on Monday afternoon, Reuters reported. The Maltese Foreign Ministry said it was trying to establish why the planes had landed.

The Al Jazeera satellite network reported the Libyan fighter jets were seen landing in Malta with two civilian helicopters. At least seven passengers were aboard, only one reported to be carrying a passport, according to Al Jazeera. All of the passengers were being held by immigration officials, the network reported. Al Jazeera's Karl Stagno-Novarra, reporting from Malta, said officials on the Mediterranean island were preparing for it to be used as a base for evacuating European citizens from Libya, an hour's flight away.
