Why do they constantly mislead and rewrite history?
I went for a bike ride this morning and saw the following on a church marquee " 09/11 1777 Congress orders the purchase of 20,000 Bibles for Americans. Our Constitution derived from God".

I was stunned when I saw this so I decided to stop and speak to the Pastor of this Baptist Church. I informed him that we only had a Continental Congress in 1777 and that our 1st U.S. Congress did not convene until March 04, 1789 and we did not have a U.S. Constitution until September 17, 1787 and that in 1777 we only had had the Articles of Confederation & that wasn't even ratified until 1781. I also told him that I felt that he was misrepresenting historical facts and omitting Continental which changes the whole quote entirely. Also God is not mentioned in the U.s. Constitution.

All the pastor would say to to me is that he would pray for my soul. I told him not to bother my God has it covered. Then I left.

I have to say that as a person of faith, this just brings tears to my eyes.

1. Lie to get people on your side
It seems to be the accepted thing. The Minister probably learned it from Fox News.

2. Their evil?
I think there is a rule that says "never attribute to stupidity what could more easily be explained by malice."

3. There is a strong minotiryt that truly believes that the US
is the new land of Israel. It goes to the Puritans and a certain sermon on a certain well known boat.

And I am sure he confused those bibles for bullets... that is what the Continental Congress was ordering in 1777.

It bothers me that some folks do not understand this tension, since it is easy to see where it is comming from.

But yes, he misreperensted history, and they have been at it form day one.

6. If you don't like the facts, just make up new propaganda to support your lies
That tends to be how history gets written.

8. There's a sliver of truth to that, BUT....
The war with Britain cut off the supply of Bibles to the United States with the result that on September 11, 1777, the Continental Congress passed a motion that would have instructed its Committee of Commerce to import 20,000 Bibles from "Scotland, Holland or elsewhere."

This, however, was not a final vote. A second motion was made to pass an actual resolution to import the Bibles, but was postponed and never considered again. On January 21, 1781, Aitken petitioned the Continental Congress to certify his version of the Bible which he had already printed as being textually accurate. Congress agreed to his request to endorse his Bible as accurate to help out the American printing industry, but denied his other requests that his Bible "be published under the Authority of Congress," and that he "be commissioned or otherwise appointed & Authorized to print and vend Editions of the Sacred Scriptures."

Despite the 7 year interruption in the availability of Bibles, and over a year without any competition from imports, his Bible was a commercial failure and he ended up losing over £3,000 on the 10,000 Bibles he printed. His later attempt to have Congress buy his Bibles and give them to soldiers being discharged was rejected by Congress. He died in Philadelphia in 1802.

9. Because they are not comfortable with truth, nor do they want to live with it.
And they certainly don't want to acknowledge it because truth would destroy their political and religious arguments.
