When a Country Goes Insane
by Robert Freeman

This must be what it’s like when a country goes insane, when it falls down a rabbit hole and tries to pretend that everything is normal.

It can’t tell truths from lies. Hucksters pose as upright men, and people imagine they are Solons, avatars of insight come down from the ages. Sleazy operators pass themselves off as statesmen, as thinkers of deep gravitas, and the crowds, unable to distinguish sanctimony from sincerity, bravado from bullshit, lap it up.

Let’s be clear. It was the Republicans who wrecked the economy. Both their people and their policies drove the economy into the ditch. They wrecked the economy not once, but twice in the last eighty years.

So Republicans condescending to instruct Americans about how to fix the economy is like the captain of the Titanic lecturing shipping operators about safe procedures for navigating the north Atlantic. No sane society would tolerate it. But this one does.

2. Yes, let's be clear.
If we don't say it, some folks will never know. They don't listen to that channel.

9. How did it happen
For some it was expecting a miracle to fix problems in two years that Bush/Republicans created in 8...for others it was the Black guy in the White House!!!

And let's not forget those independent voters who sit on the fence every election cycle and the Democrats that didn't bother to show up to vote at all.

7. I like this analogy
"So Republicans condescending to instruct Americans about how to fix the economy is like the captain of the Titanic lecturing shipping operators about safe procedures for navigating the north Atlantic."

The Repubs out-numbered the Democrats in voting for the NAFTA treaty but it was bi-partisan.

(on edit, removed this) very few Democrats, if any, signed NAFTA, except one. And he was the President. That is all the Repubs needed.

17. "Very few"? All the most powerful Dems, from the Clintons, Kerry, Gore, Ted Kennedy, Pres. Obama,
and many others in Congress have been pushing so-called "free trade" since the mid-90s. I really disagree that it's "very few"!

Thanks for the link. Speaks to the "very few" and "the Republicans MADE him do it!" arguments quite convincingly.

18. This is very true and WE must speak the truth to the lies that the
GOP continue to mouth. Do not let them distract us. Speak the truth to their fairy tales. Speak the truth to the damage done by Reagan and Bush. Isn't it strange how the small government, stay out of our lives, Tea Party folks are siding with government over the people in WI?

That bill in WI is not about fixing a short fall in their budget, the unions have agreed to the money part it is the killing of their collective bargaining that is the hold up. That is union busting. Unions are what made it possible for a middle class to grow and become strong. That is where the idea of a 40 hour work week came from, that is where benefits came from, that is where reasonable wages came from. Unions are not some evil thing, it is about employees having a safe place to work, to have reasonable wages, overtime pay, vacation and sick pay, holidays, and a method of working out problems, it is about being able to address problems and come to an agreement. Unions do make concessions when times are bad, it is their best interest for the company to do well, but it is also in the company's best interest to take care of it's workforce, one depends upon the other. If the GOP thugs manage to bust the unions, the benefits that we all enjoy will be in jeopardy also.

I am not a union member, however, I do know that they are not some EVIL bunch also. We all enjoy the rights that they have fought for.

23. I am convinced this is a manufactured economic train wreck
Designed to bring the American workers to their knees.
The rich are unwilling to sacrifice because they know there is no real problem. The only problems are suffered by the middle and lower income classes.
