Unions are formed when people no longer trust their employers.
When companies abuse their people, don't pay them right, don't provide good benefits (including retirement, BTW) and generally run those employees into the ground...

THEN unions come into being.

It is an unfortunate fact, but there it is.

We always need to have the right to organize. Otherwise, we are nothing but slave labor.

My 2 cents...

11. Trust me, my dear samplegirl!
The last 10 years I worked, I belonged to a Union...

It was pivotal in making my workplace a safer, more productive one.

Yay for Ohio!

10. That's why small business tends to not unionize.
There are actual people involved in the ownership and management of the company. It is easier for the employer to empathize with the employee when you know their families and go to the same church.

12. I know that.
And I have no quarrel with it.

As I said: when the employees no longer trust the employer...

And in a small business, there is a lot more communication and trust between the management and the staff.

It's a good thing.

13. Proud union member here
Unions are there to advocate for our side. Often, they are often advocating for the general good, sometimes not. Either way, it's important that WE have a voice to oppose THEIR voice. It's an aversarial system, much like our justice system and ensures that both sides getto take part on a somewhat equal playing field

17. With some exceptions, workers shouldn't trust their employers. Especially
if they change your status from employee to "associate." Look out!

18. Hustorcally the right has not been there
until the Wagner Act of 1935... this is what they want.

And people have never trusted their employers... nor should they.

Unless this is an EMPLOYEE owned shop... that changes the dynamic

19. Exactly!
Employers who treat their employees like human beings have nothing to fear from unions. The larger a business is, the harder it is for employees to always be treated right. A union is a more efficient way of dealing with the problems that come up, especially in larger workplaces. I learned this at my father's knee, in the years where he always voted Republican (Eishenhower Republican). Maybe he was a Dem all along, but this is just common sense to me!
