2. It was required in my high school long ago.
Can't remember which one, probably american history or sociology (only remember who taught it, had him for many classes and as a coach).

Once upon a time, back when high school teachers only needed to teach and help their students prepares for the SAT's and ACT's.

8. I never understood why they want to go back.
They have to eat the meat too.

I guess they could hire personal food tasters?

14. Oh, no. Their meat doesn't come from slaughter houses.
The servants bring it in from somewhere in neat little shrink-wrap packages.

5. It's bad enough now..
Wait until the
Repubs get through with the FDA. Assholes.

"House Republicans are pushing for cuts to taxpayer funding of the FDA and other agencies in a drive to reduce government spending, setting up a showdown with Democrats who are resisting major reductions.

Republican Representative John Shimkus told Shuren that increases in FDA funding from Congress were unlikely.

"You can ask all you want. There's no more money," Shimkus said. To create new jobs, "we have to ease the regulatory burden," he said."

9. Required reading in high school for me.
I was always a good little liberal. That book helped make me the flaming radical I am today.

10. Quote from Upton Sinclair
"I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."..In other words, he meant to shine a light on working conditions, and instead the public focused on the poor food health standards on the meat packing facilities.

12. There's two versions of it. Make sure you don't read the gutted one.

Oil! was a good book as well. Although the socialist b.s. got annoying at the end.

13. Before the meatpacking industry became
one big monopoly, working in that field was a decent job. Now the packers have moved all of their plants into very small towns out in the middle of nowhere and employ undocumented workers. So many of the workers have lost fingers, hands, etc.

I fucking hate greedy corporations and their CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and all the little VPs who kiss ass.

16. I read The Jungle, 1984, and Animal Farm when I was in 7th grade back in the 70's
I had a cousin that was three years older than me and I 'always' borrowed as many books from her as I could.

All three books listed above should be required reading for freshmen in HIGH SCHOOL.
Many kids drop out of school before they finish high school, tons don't go to college - so the books should be read early on.
Just my opinion ;)

19. One of my favorite books... and one of the few that I've IMMEDIATELY re-read...
.
.
.
...with a highlighter in hand. From personal experience, it just doesn't seem
to be nearly as widely-read as in my day.
.
.
.
I always get Upton Sinclair confused with Sinclair Lewis as "Babbitt" is also
one of my favorite socio-political novels -- and both are still so applicable
to our times now.
.
.
.
The Republicans in power can afford free-range, organic small-ranch/farm
meats that don't have the same perils as the huge operations' products have.
They are adept at convincing even those whose children will be imperiled by
de-regulation that "gummint innerference is bad... BAD!!" Then denial of their
own complicity will keep those same folks from admitting they were wrong
when THEIR children start dying of e coli and worse.
.
They will find a tortorous logical path to blame the gummint for that, too.
That is... if it isn't a conservative gummint in power.
.
.
I once had a libertarian tell me "conservatives wouldn't shit where they eat --
they're not about to let the water and food supplies go bad." Let's guess how
many of those in power have their children living on the grid in areas like
the chemical-plant clusters in Louisiana, et.al.
.
.
.
Just EAT ME, conservatives.
.
.
.
Goodness... see what emotions that book STILL has the power to dredge up?
.
.
.

Many moons ago ... still a great book that OUGHT TO BE required reading. Sadly, my kids didn't have to read it in h.s.

28. It wasn't required reading for me anywhere but...
I did read it on my own a long time ago.

I have to laugh...I guess that's how we can tell we're grown up.

We read stuff nobody actually had to make us read.
