will the teachers strike?

************

Reagan fires 11,000 striking air traffic controllers Aug. 5, 1981

On this day in 1981, President Ronald Reagan fired more than 11,000 air traffic controllers who ignored his order to return to work. The sweeping mass firing of federal employees slowed commercial air travel, but it did not cripple the system as the strikers had forecast.

Two days earlier, nearly 13,000 controllers walked out after talks with the Federal Aviation Administration collapsed. As a result, some 7,000 flights across the country were canceled on that day at the peak of the summer travel season.

Robert Poli, president of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization, sought an across-the-board annual wage increase of $10,000 for the controllers, whose pay ranged from $20,462 to $49,229 per year. He also sought a reduction of their five-day, 40-hour workweek to a four-day, 32-hour workweek. The FAA made a $40 million counteroffer, far short of the $770 million package that the union sought.

Reagan branded the strike illegal. He threatened to fire any controller who failed to return to work within 48 hours. Federal judges levied fines of $1 million per day against the union.

3. i edited to ask that question....that may be the only move they have. to strike.
he could probably convince himself that he has the ability to fire them if they don't show up for work

2. Good point
But we're on to this one. Reagan just went before the media... and the media went on one knee.

10. One knee - the media most certainly did NOT.
They went down on 2 knees, opened wide, and waited for the zipper to come down.

20. That's a joke I got from Ralph Nader.
He once quiped that the difference between the dems and the repubs is that the dems get down on their knees when big business walks in the room. The repubs are already on their knees just in case business might walk in.

Love him or hate him, Nader makes some good points.

21. Well I love that line
and I was a delegate for Nader too, so I guess it follows that I'd like his wit.

5. No, he will not
except for those employed by the state University system, the state is not their employer. Individual school districts are.

6. They don't work for the state of Wisconsin. Can't be fired by the governor.
They work for their local school districts.

7. I don't think the Governor has the power to fire the teachers.
They are not state workers, but employees of various school districts.

8. Replace them with WHO?
There was a charter school where I used to lived about 10 years ago where the teachers didn't have BA's and the aides not even HS diplomas. The school was infested with all sort of vermin. The younger kids were wearing extremely soiled underwear. There were roaches crawling all over the food. The company behind this was also bilking the state for millions of dollars. Needless to say, it was shut down ASAP.

Is THIS what they want?

The air traffic controllers worked for the federal govt. Teachers don't. They don't work for the state either.

23. Fire - NO. Layoff - YEP.
It's the way things are done these days. If you can't meet budget you just chop from the bottom and lay off enough people to make up the difference.
