Yesterday's threads: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11

Threads for previous days are in my journal

To make sure the Army doesn't swing the revolution to the people, with the silent complicity of world leaders more concerned about the stability of oil prices than people's lives, Qaddafi has brought in more than 35,000 North African mercenaries specifically from Chad, Nigeria, Guinea and Darfur. There's a Facebook video of a captured mercenary from Chad (Youtube here). Captured mercenaries confessed they were paid between $12,000 - $30,000 each. Today pamphlet ads were found in Nigeria offering them $2000/day for their savage work.

Is Qaddafi the only one paying these mercenaries? Or are EU governments, with their long history of hiring mercenaries, chipping in? I demand to know.

12. It's just horrific.
My mom asks my why I look, says I shouldn't because it's disturbing. WTH. And who then will bear witness? CNN?

Last night, I put on CNN for a few minutes before falling asleep. @bencnn gave a good report from East Libya but the US-based anchor whitewashed the whole thing.

When he put up a video of mercenaries driving up and down the streets in their jeeps, a video someone risked their life to take, he called them soldiers, as if it was the Libyan Army patrolling the streets for safety.

I will never watch CNN again.

Ghaddafi’s private pilot has fled Libya

Ghaddafi’s private pilot has fled Libya

Afrol News, 23 February

- The pilot of Moammar Ghaddafi’s private jet, a Norwegian citizen, has been able to flee Libya with his family. They are now safe in Vienna after fearing for their lives in Libya.

57-year-old Odd Birger Johansen for the last year has been the pilot of the private jet of Colonel Ghaddafi. Until yesterday, he was in Tripoli, together with his wife and daughter that had chosen this unhappy moment to visit him for a holiday in Libya.

Yesterday, he spoke to the private Norwegian broadcaster ‘TV2′, saying he wanted to evacuate Libya as soon as possible. “Right now, the way I feel it, is that things are burning around me … and I don’t want to … I am not a hero, I will go home,” Mr Johansen told the broadcaster.

...

Also a large number of Libyans have defected over the last few days; including top diplomats, two ministers, large parts of the army, major tribe leaders – and of course, the Libyan people.

13. The problem with that...
...is that it is to easy and quick, it is simply impossible to draw the execution process out long enough to settle the score. You would need to clone a few thousand of Gaddafi if everyone who were wronged by him should get their pound of flesh.

Libya: Obama Speaks, Tweeps Heckle
Posted 24 February 2011

United States President Barack Obama broke his silence on Libya in a speech at the White House on Wednesday, but his words did little to satisfy the listening masses on Twitter who for the most heckled the president in tweets throughout the speech.

Without mentioning Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi by name, Obama condemned the violence unleashed on Libyans since anti-government protests began on the night of February 16 (#Feb17) and offered condolences for those killed.

The Lions and the cocaine addict ¨Graphic¨

The grandchildren of the desert’s lion Omar Mukhtar are continuing in their honorable revolution against Qaddafi whom I can’t find any word to describe with after except cocaine addict. I remember that I have always wondered what Qaddafi used to take , he seemed to be on some sort of drug based on his photos and actions. He is just our version of Keith Richard !! Crazy evil Keith Richard to be specific. The Italian FM is speaking about a death toll of not less 1000 Libyan killed by this crackpot’s regime. The west is scared that he may use chemical weapons against his own people. The reference to Waco incident in Taxes made me uncomfortable already. Let’s wish that someone kill this man and arrest his sons and gang. There is also fear that Qaddafi will set the oil on fire in a desperate attempt. I read tweets that one of his sons’ special forces are heading to the oil refineries to set it on fire. If Qaddafi sets the oil on fire all the West will be inside Libya !! The League of Arab states has suspended the participation of Libyan delegation in the meeting of the Leagues. Already I believe the Libyan envoy to the League resigned from two days ago.

The biggest slap to that crackpot was when we find his loyal and hero Abdel Fatah Younis announcing that he is alive and that he has joined the free people of Benghazi !!

VIDEO of Abdel Fatah Younis announcing that he is alive and is with the revolution

For half an hour Qaddafi was screaming and cursing the people of Benghazi for killing his long time buddy and hero Abdel Fataaaaaaaaaaaaaaah , people outside wondered who Abdel Fatah was !!

...

Do you see that .50m calibre on the left? This is what Qaddafi uses against his own people

...

Also the Tribes of the city of Zentan has issued a statement attacking Qaddafi. Qaddafi attacked them for half an hour too. This statement is extremely important because the tribes of Zentan is threatening to cut all the oil supplies to the West if the regime of Qaddafi does not step down. The pipelines already are under the Zentan tribes' control.

VIDEO of statement.

Jazeera, I want to deliver this information, I confirmed it personally, on my responsibility. I am a Libyan citizen. Today in Benghazi they discovered a room underground, a room that is completely locked-in. Completely locked. Holding 1500 young men from Benghazi. From the 15th of February the first day of demonstrations to today when they got them out, the 22nd, they had been without food or water. They heard the voices from the barracks, noise, people. After they went to check, they got them out, God be praised, alive. 1500 young men, buried alive, buried alive. Muammar must be obliterated. We will not surrender. Our dead are in heaven, he is in hell. God bear witness that I have delivered this message, if there are any Muslims. God willing.

45. You're right about some. Just came across some stuff
PS Comrade Fawwaz reminds me that among those leftist leaders who flocked to Qadhdhafi's Libya was none other than George Habash. That can't be denied. Habash's PFLP also inexcusably aligned itself with Saddam Husayn. Those sins of the left are unforgivable by my standards because they burdened those of us leftist who came later, and they damaged the cause of Leftism in the Arab world.
Posted by As'ad AbuKhalil at 6:07 AM

Al-Qadhdhafi's last speech
It was an unusual speech: following his political rhetoric over the years, I would say it was more like the young Qadhdhafi. He never was an orator: he speaks like a street thug. But in recent years, his oratorical mode have changed: he has been speaking for years as if he is sedated, as if he talks while under the influence of tranquilizing pills. Not yesterday. His tone was strong and sharp as in yester years. He was the street thug: and war criminal that he is. UNSC condemned the killing: Mubarak and Bin Ali killed more than 300 civilians and no one reacted. So according to UN standards, it is acceptable to kill 300 civilians by Arab tyrants, but more than that number would lead to UN condemnation. Obama and Hillary still don't want Qadhdhafi to surrender power: they fear the impact on oil field, just as they feared the impact in Egypt on the lousy peace treaty. Qadhdhafi said yesterday that great powers and their representatives came to him and paid their respect. That was true: tell that to Paul Wolfowitz: I read his lousy piece in the WSJ today on the plane and he berated Hillary for meeting with Mu`tasim Qadhdhafi. She and Obama should be condemned: but he forgot that it was his Bush administration that engineered the honey moon with Qadhdhafi. Qadhdhafi will go down violently: as I have said for weeks now. He is so loathed by his people. None of his ideas or schemes or gimmicks would stay. The ugly green that he promoted will soon disappear from Libya. Shame on all the leftist groups and quasi leftist leaders who gave support to Qadhdhafi over the years: especially George Hawi, Muhsin Ibrahim, Walid Jumblat, and others. Do you know when he fought his war in Chad, he asked those leaders to send him fighters and they actually did in return for his dollars. What about that US tenured professor who wrote a book in English in praise of Qadhdhafi's Green Book? He told me that wrote it in return for Libyan money. The ball is rolling: it does not seem to stop.

If the tide turns: some pros and cons of military intervention in Libya
By Steve Negus February 24, 2011 at 2:28 AM

In the last few days there have been a number of calls for international intervention to try to stem the atrocities that the Qaddafi regime is carrying out against Libyan civilians, including military measures such as the imposition of a no-fly zone. (Sanctions and other steps have also been proposed, but I doubt that they would have much impact on a regime fighting for its life).

We might be past the point where the declaration of a no-fly zone would make a major difference -- the Libyan air force (that part which has not defected) does not appear to be terribly effective and airlifted mercenary forces in the east seem to be contained. The city of Tripoli and several other towns on the west coast do appear to be at the mercy of loyalist mercenaries and militias, and are suffering terribly, but there is probably little that could be done militarily, short of a massive and prohibitively problematic amphibious invasion, to rescue them. Rebels in Benghazi are reportedly beginning to mobilize to move west, so perhaps Libyans will be able to liberate themselves.

However, dictators have come back from the brink before: Saddam in 1991, for example, although his hold on the country was probably never as tenuous as Qaddafi's is right now. If there is any chance Qaddafi were to stage a major turnaround, and bring major rebel-held cities like Benghazi or Misrata under siege, then the United States and other powers capable of intervention in Libya should consider what might be done to prevent a terrible humanitarian disaster.

Here are a few thoughts, both for and against intervention, mostly extrapolated from my experience in Iraq. I have focused here on the likely local impact on Libya, as opposed to issues of legality or sovereignty, of precedent, or of any larger strategic or historical picture.

Mass Burial - Tripoli, Libya FEB 22

Tuesday, FEB 22: Our contacts inside Libya shared a saddening story with us and were brave enough to send us these shocking images. The video and images below were shot in the aftermath of Gadaffi's death squads. We have been told many residents of Tripoli fear to even collect the corpses in the street, as Libyan Forces are reportedly firing at random.

40. Hannibal Gaddafi
I wonder what his middle name is.

Beyoncé and the $2m gig for Colonel Gaddafi's son
Did Beyoncé not have any idea about who was paying for her services? None other than Hannibal Gaddafi, the out-of-control son of the Libyan leader

...

The audience included Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z, and despite the best efforts of the pair's publicist to hush up the provenance of the fee, there are those beginning to question whether a couple whose combined worth was recently estimated at $1bn really need to rent themselves out to sons of one of the Great Satan's least beloved antagonists.

Of which more later. For now, if you're having trouble keeping your Gaddafi spawn straight, you should know that Hannibal, 33, is fast cementing his place as the black sheep of an otherwise enchanting family. Sure, his elder brother Moatessem-Billah is alleged to have once attempted a coup against his own father, but Mo's totally back inside the Bedouin tent now. In fact, he's a national security adviser, so he's positively pissing out of it, while Hannibal . . . well, what can you say about the boy? He's an absolute scumbag, my darlinks – such an unusual trait in a waster fifth son of a tenuously sane dictator – and though I'm given to understand that even saying so will draw a call to the editor from the dedicated team of diplomats charged by Hannibal's papa with dealing with the crap he leaves in his wake, I can't think we should worry ourselves too much about such things.

... (nasty stuff)

Indeed, as far as European powers taking a hard line on Hannibal is concerned, we must award a rare thumbs up to Switzerland, which, in 2008, held both him and Aline in police custody for two days for allegedly beating their servants. It is fair to say the Colonel did not take this in enormously good part.

He immediately shut down Libyan subsidiaries of Nestlè and ABB, cut oil supplies to Switzerland, cancelled most commercial flights between the two countries, withdrew around $5bn from his Swiss bank accounts and arrested two travelling Swiss businessmen. Two months ago, these men were convicted of visa irregularities and tax evasion, and jailed for 16 months each. In July last year Gaddafi submitted a proposal to the UN calling for the abolition of Switzerland.

48. Gaddafi's speech a couple days back didn't have the ring of anything Shakespearian
Rather, it reminded of Richard Mulligan in the role of Custer reciting an early draft his acceptance of the Democratic Party's nomination for President as Cheyenne and Sioux arrows and bullets flew around him and the rest of his command lay dying at the end of Little Big Man.

Strong winds have been whipping up high waves in the Mediterranean and the catamaran, Maria Dolores, was not likely to leave Tripoli's As-shahab port until Friday at the earliest, ferry officials said.

Qaddafi Massing Forces in Tripoli as Rebellion Spreads

By KAREEM FAHIM and DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: February 24, 2011

BAIDA, Libya — Forces loyal to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi were reported to be striking back in several cites surrounding Tripoli on Thursday, as rebellion crept closer to the capital and defections of military officers multiplied.

The minaret of a mosque in Zawiya, a city 30 miles west of Tripoli where protesters had claimed victory, was blasted by heavy weapons in a morning attack, killing or wounding protesters who had been using the building as a refuge, a witness told The Associated Press by telephone. And in Sabratha, about 50 miles west of the capital where a government crackdown has been under way for several days, gunshots rang out as military troops filled the town, a witness said. With journalists banned from the area, it was impossible to independently verify these reports.

<snip>

Dozens of checkpoints operated by a combination of foreign mercenaries and plainclothes militiamen lined the road west of Tripoli for the first time, witnesses said, requiring not only the presentation of official papers but also displays of flag-waving, fist-pumping enthusiasm for Colonel Qaddafi, who has long fashioned himself as a pan-African icon.

“You are trying to convince them you are a loyalist,” one resident said, “and the second they realize that you are not, you are done for.”
