11. I think this is the very defintiion of 'pulling the race card' |
|
at least in a pejorative sense. Race can and should be brought up in certain situations, but I think when one injects race into a discussion where it doesn't necessarily belong, they are open to accusations of improper 'race carding' and this is a good example of that. It's a rather feeble attempt to imply that pro-choice white people are partly motivated by a desire to limit the African American births and part of a broader effort appeal to anti-abortion sentiment within the African-American community. It's not the first time pro-life groups have used race-based appeals, though from what I can tell this type of thing is becoming more common, which might be a sign of desperation.

14. I have to ask, how is this NOT racist. |
|
It's their pathetically thinly veiled way of saying, "Black women have abortion after abortion and are therefore dangerous, immoral, etc etc etc."
How can this possibly be construed as NOT racist? I don't get it.

I think post #20 nailed it. This is actually supposed to be an appeal directly to the African American community. What they're essentially saying is 'racist white liberals want you to abort your unborn children because they want less of you around . . . we, on the other hand, love unborn babies of every color.'
Every once in a while the right uses race-based arguments/insinuations to try to appeal to African-Americans, usually with little success. Being an Ohioan, I remember during one of Ken Blackwell's campaigns he ran an ad on hip-hop/R&B stations that depicted a conversation between two African-American women. I'm trying to reconstruct this from memory, but I seem to recall that one woman old the other: 'I'm voting for Ken Blackwell and you should too, because you know how they do . . .'

African Americans are demonized for having too many kids and being 'welfare queens' and 'deadbeat dads', but alternatively, taking control over their reproductive selves is being demonized too, in a religious way. The Right has to have a scapegoat, one way or the other.

19. And just to make sure the poor can continue being scapegoats, |
|
Gov. Branstead in Iowa plans to reduce the family planning assistance available to low-income women.
Prevent the poor from getting contraceptives, and then you can tut-tut at them if they have a baby out of wedlock, or scowl at them if they have an abortion.
Win-Win!!!
