Students use spring break to help Habitat for Humanity

PALM COAST -- While most of the spring breakers flocking south this time of the year will have their sights set on soaking up the sun, students from nine different colleges and high schools are coming to Flagler County to work hard to make a difference for homeowners-to-be.

Habitat for Humanity's Collegiate Challenge program has been inspiring thousands of high school students, college students, church group members, and other community youth organization group members to pledge their spring breaks to service each year since 1989. It is a commitment that, according to Flagler Habitat for Humanity Director of Programs Joanna Folsom, makes the Collegiate Challenge Program a special experience for everyone involved.

"The kids bring an energy and excitement that really defines the program," Folsom said.

According to Folsom, Flagler County Habitat for Humanity is expecting to have approximately 260 students from the program during this spring break season. Students started arriving Feb. 20. Each group stays for a week, building houses Monday through Thursday and taking Friday off to enjoy Flagler County. The program is expected to wrap up on April 7. During this time, the students will be building four houses, two in Bunnell and two in Palm Coast.
