Officials: No forcible removal of protesters from state Capitol
Officials: No forcible removal of protesters from state Capitol

State officials said this evening there will be no forcible removal of protesters from the state Capitol.

“A decision has been made to do what they’ve been doing all week long and that is to do everything to keep things peaceful and keep people safe,” said Peg Schmidt, spokeswoman for the police command in the Capitol. “There’s not going to be any forcible removal.”

But officials would still like to clear the building so that it can be cleaned.

“We are still looking for voluntary compliance and for people to leave because we believe the cleaning operation is important,” Schmidt said.

1. Good decision. I'm sure if they talk to the protesters they will
agree to leave temporarily so that they can clean the building. No need for force, these people are reasonable.

4. Or move from area to area.
I'm sure no one would disagree with moving everyone out of the west wing for a few hours, then the north wing, then the east, then the south. Just rotate through. People can stay in the building and the building can get cleaned.

14. I think it's been resolved.
They can probably move from area to area and allow workers in to clean up.

But I'm really glad they did not turn it into a stand-off. They are showing how there really is no need for force most of the time. All those Robo Cops at demonstrations should be banned from now on.

Wisconsin is showing how democracy works! So proud of them!

16. I stand in awe - seriously. I wish more Americans were paying attention (as I
sit here and glare at my brother and sister-in-law riveted to the Academy Awards).

2. Voluntary compliance could very well
result in a value added product.

3. If they can't come in and clean with all the people there - put cones
outside the restroom, then give the people the supplies to clean and re-stock. The Egyptians did it, so will the American people.

6. I hope the people don't take the "cleaning" bait
It smells similar to the ruse to try and get the legislators back to Wisconsin.

Once they leave the building, they won't get back in.

But this is great news for tonight. The people held the space. This is a victory.

7. the protesters don't need to leave
for cleaning crews to get their work done. they just need to vacate one area at a time so that the cleaning crews can work and then move so other areas can be cleaned.
if they leave they risk being locked out.

8. As someone who has cleaned for a living, and anyone with common sense, this is bogus.
A building with multi levels does not have to be cleared to be cleaned.

12. This is the beginning of the end for Walker. He wanted them out. He has had to back down.
Keep that tail between your legs, Scott. You're not done yet.
