Oil is both a blessing and a curse, Libya's oil is one of the finest on the planet, and geographically perfect for transport by ship

But let us not forget, Libya has more then oil, it is home to 7 million people who fought for her freedom

Libya will be free in a shiber shiber, every bayt bayt, every dar dar and the zenga's of tripoli to benghazi

(shiber, bayt, dar, zenga = alley, street, road not in that order but I remember they translated before for us)

Libya: neither tribal nor Islamist
Libyans want democracy, justice and freedom. This revolution is for all, and won't fall to extremists

Mahmoud Al-Nakou
guardian.co.uk, Sunday 27 February 2011 21.00 GMT

...

Until then the liberation of Libya, street by street and town by town, goes on unabated. Already, a number of towns and cities have declared independence from Gaddafi's regime and have begun in earnest the job of running their daily affairs. Community committees and councils of the elders have already been established in Benghazi, Musrata and Zawiyah, to help restore life and normality in anticipation of the fall of Tripoli and the complete removal of Gaddafi and his inner circle.

The fear expressed by some international commentators that Libya will fall into the hands of extremists is totally unfounded. The very nature of Libyan society will not allow it. There is little doubt that Islam as a faith, culture and identity runs strongly through our heritage and tradition, but violence and extremism are foreign. Indeed, Gaddafi had to bring hordes of mercenaries from other African countries to carry out orders that Libyan police and army refused. Rather, it is the Turkish model of government that most Libyans aspire to; where Islamic ethics and values enrich endeavours to achieve democracy, justice, freedom and development.

The west should welcome this region's transformation to an open, democratic environment, and should not impede the people's aspirations. Our hope, too, is that once Libya comes to hold its first free and fair elections, the outcome will be fully respected across the world, come what may.

Gaddafi's last gambit is to play the tribal card. In his last couple of speeches, he promised various tribes riches and lands, using the old divide and rule tactic. Various commentators have made the mistake of believing that Libya is a tribal society. It is not, and one needn't look any further than the revolution to see nobody is standing out or standing apart from the Libyan youth who have led the people in their march towards a free Libya.

Edited on Mon Feb-28-11 09:40 AM by Catherina
I keep thinking of the nightmare in Iraq and Afghanistan as I listen to her speech. Nice speech but no confidence Hillary. Sorry.

The empire is dying. Try to transition with grace and reform our industry so that MIC isn't biggest export. End the wars, their continuance makes the speech sad.

And quit propping up Gaddafi's ex-Minister of Justice who's trying to sabotage the Revolution.

When you're done, could you update us on the situation in Iraq and the vicious, bloody crackdown on people protesting what their country has become under Western occupation? They'd like some democracy there.

European Union Will Impose Sanctions On Libya
by NPR STAFF AND WIRES

...

The EU also said that Gadhafi was no longer in control of most of the country's lucrative oil and gas fields.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented the Obama administration's case for stronger action to EU foreign ministers from Britain, France, Germany and Italy as part of the high-level talks in Geneva.

...

"We've been reaching out to many different Libyans who are attempting to organize in the east and as the revolution moves westward there as well," Clinton said. "I think it's way too soon to tell how this is going to play out, but we're going to be ready and prepared to offer any kind of assistance that anyone wishes to have from the United States."

Two U.S. senators said Washington should recognize and arm a provisional government in rebel-held areas of eastern Libya and impose a no-fly zone over the area — enforced by U.S. warplanes — to stop attacks by the regime. But France's Fillon said a no-fly zone needed U.N. support, "which is far from being obtained today."

One of the main opposition leaders in Libya finds that the international community more measures ... against Gaddafi. For example, a grounding of Libyan appliances.

53. Libyan Opposition Leaders Receive U.S. Offer of `Assistance,' Clinton Says

The U.S. has made contact with and will offer assistance to opponents of Muammar Qaddafi’s regime who control the eastern part of Libya and are making gains in the west.

While opposition leaders began planning a provisional government, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said for the first time today that the U.S. has begun “reaching out” to Libyans organizing for a post-Qaddafi era.

“We’ve been reaching out to many different Libyans who are attempting to organize in the east and, as the revolution moves westward, there as well,” Clinton told reporters traveling with her to Geneva for consultations tomorrow with foreign ministers.

“I think it’s way too soon to tell how this is going to play out, but we’re going to be ready and prepared to offer any kind of assistance that anyone wishes to have from the United States,” she said.

The disclosure of talks with opponents of the Qaddafi government, however preliminary, signaled a new effort by the U.S. to prod Qaddafi from power. State Department spokesman Philip J. Crowley said Feb. 25, “I can’t say that we, the United States, have had any contact with the opposition at this point.”

Mercenaries
“We want him to leave, we want him to end his regime” and to call off the mercenaries who are targeting Libyan citizens, Clinton said.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke with Qaddafi within the last two days to urge him to step down and allow for a transitional government, Britain’s Channel 4 News reported today. The U.K. revoked the diplomatic immunity of Qaddafi and his family, U.K. Foreign Minister William Hague said today.

In another sign of European solidarity against Qaddafi, Italy today said it has suspended a treaty with Libya that includes a non-aggression clause, the Associated Press reported. The suspension would allow Italy to use its military bases or to take part in any peacekeeping operations in Libya, AP said.

Why is this not a major story?: "The Iraqi capital Baghdad is now under curfew following nationwide protests which have called for more government accountability." http://story.irishsun.com/index.php/ct/9/cid/2411cd3571b4f088/id/749373/cs/1/

At least 19 dead in Iraq as tens of thousands join protests
US says army, police mostly don’t use force

Protesters pulled concrete blast walls leading to the heavily guarded Green Zone during a protest in Baghdad yesterday. Unlike protesters in other Arab countries, the Iraqis were not calling for a new government, but for reforms from Iraq’s elected leaders. (Hadi Mizban/Associated Press)

BAGHDAD — Tens of thousands of Iraqis took to the streets yesterday in nationwide protests that left at least 19 dead and dozens wounded, but the US military consciously and conspicuously remained on the sideline.

...

Two protesters were shot dead by Iraqi security forces in the northern city of Mosul, and one was killed in Ramadi. A crowd of more than 1,000 demonstrators in Baghdad, some tossing bricks and rocks, clashed with troops and riot police on a key bridge leading to government offices in the protected international Green Zone.

But according to US Embassy officials, the Iraqi Army and police appear to have passed this test following years of high-priority training by US military advisers to help them function as a standalone, sovereign force.

“What we have seen . . . is that Iraq’s security forces generally have not used force against peaceful protesters,’’ Aaron Snipe, deputy spokesman for the US Embassy, said last evening. “There have been reports of violence in separate incidents. But Iraqi security forces appear to have followed Prime Minister Maliki’s directive by ensuring that citizens who choose to protest peacefully would be allowed to do so.’’
