Novel idea here, how about the UN investigate and stop arms transfers period?

Exclusive: U.N. probes Zimbabwe arms transfers to Ivory Coast

UNITED NATIONS | Thu Mar 3, 2011 4:15pm EST
(Reuters) - The United Nations is investigating suspected arms transfers from Zimbabwe to Ivory Coast's incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo in violation of U.N. sanctions, according to a report obtained by Reuters.

The report emerged after a week of gun battles between forces loyal to Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara, almost universally recognized as winner of a November 28 poll, that risk pushing the top cocoa grower back to full-blown civil war.

Diplomats on the U.N. Security Council said the possible transfer of weapons to Gbagbo was a serious matter. They said his forces could use them against U.N. peacekeepers -- UNOCI, who recognize Ouattara as Ivory Coast's president -- or Ivorian civilians who support Ouattara.

UNOCI's confidential "Embargo monitoring report January 2011," obtained by Reuters on Thursday, said the mission was gathering more information on "the arrival of light weapons cargoes from Zimbabwe." U.N. officials told Reuters arms from Zimbabwe would have been intended for Gbagbo and not Ouattara.

In January, Gbagbo sent a special envoy to Harare to meet with and enlist the support of Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, who like Gbagbo has been accused by his opponents of election fraud and is under U.S. and European Union sanctions.

Good, bad, what? Hundreds if not thousands could be killed by such an attack.

24. That would be a bad move, with costly consequences
That kind of attempt would also maim and kill innocent civilians--and don't forget the journalists who are covering him.

The first concern is human consequences. But yes, there would be negative political consequences, too.

40. Perhaps...
Edited on Thu Mar-03-11 06:41 PM by CJvR
...but it is quite likely the cheapest way to end the Libyan civil war.
If it costs a few innocent civilians (not that there will be many of those around Gaddafi) and reporters so what? Just how many innocents are Gaddafi killing on a daily basis now? How many more will it be before the rebel forces advance through defensive lines after defensive line, house after house and dig Gaddafi out of his bunker?

Sometimes there are no good options, only various degree of bad. Letting Gaddafi stay alive to keep his crumbling empire together when there is an option to kill him is a very bad choice.

67. After the '86 bombing, which didn't work, #G had his compound doubly reinforced
to withstand any such future attacks. He's also dug in deep underground in a reinforced bunker. Where's that bunker? He's got so many tunnels down there that extend for kilometers that I'm not sure we'd even know where to bomb. And with what? Is there a precision bunker buster that doesn't cause much or extensive surface damage?

I wanted that option but after reading how extensive the tunnels were, I wonder if we really could. He's so paranoid and had 25 years to improve his hole in the ground. I'd support any option that could kill him but would this one? Is there such a weapon?

70. Undoubtedly.
But he has held long speaches in the open, that is an oppertunity.

There are bunker busters but they really aren't the kind of weapons you use to kill one specific person, particulary not if the bunker is inside a city.

That's why he's doing.

Obviously, Gaddafi doesn't feel safe in his own compound -- and presume

he understands multiple groups after him ... perhaps some even in his

own military, his own compound, his own family!!

bybarrettbrown

The decision to charge Bradley Manning with a capital offense in addition to other charges is a provocation and Anonymous is set to respond accordingly. Thus it is that we have begun #opbradley at irc.anonops.in in order to supplement our work at #oppalantir and #anonleaks. We have gone through additional e-mails via our server at anonleaks.ru and discovered the full extent of Palantir's involvement in the degenerate campaigns fielded by HBGary on behalf of their mercantile client Bank of America, which itself will be facing certain other troubles soon. But today is about Palantir, which "cut off ties" with HBGary at the beginning of the scandal and has since tried to explain away the fact that not one, but two employees told HBGary CEO Aaron Barr that the top execs, including Karp, had signed off on this possibly criminal campaign to destroy Wikileaks and the venerable journalist Glenn Greenwald. Today is the day we begin to attack Palantir in earnest - not by their methods, but by ours.

(Note: Some people have asked for background on all of this. See my Guardian op-ed from a little while back. Be sure to listen to the recording between myself and Aaron Barr, who lies his ass off. And take note of how polite I am! Lol.)

Our Palantir file is being finished at this moment. Here's a preview.

Kidnapping campaign in Tripoli
Posted on March 3, 2011 by Admin

The Network of Free Ulema in Libya has said that pro-Gaddafi forces have been carrying out kidnappings in advance of tomorrow’s planned demonstrations.

The statement from the group read:

“This is to URGENTLY notify the world and the International Criminal Court in particular, that Gaddafi and his criminal accomplices are currently (March 2nd and 3rd 2011) implementing a massive kidnapping campaign in Tripoli and its vicinities in order to ‘clean up’ key youth leaders before tomorrow’s Friday prayers, and in order to ‘look good’ to the international Media, which has been invited to Tripoli as part of a public relations campaign aimed at covering up the crimes against humanity that have been inflicted upon the brave Libyan people. We call upon and urge every man and woman of good will, worldwide, to do their utmost to save our youth from the hands of Gaddafi, his thugs, and mercenaries.”

Similar reports have been circling on Twitter, as well.

Jordanian students

Aljazeera has just aired a report about a Jordanian school in which students protesters chanted in unison against the school principal who hit a teacher. They chanted (borrowed from Egyptian protests):
الشعب يريد إسقاط المدير
(the People want the downfall of the principal). (IT does not rhyme in Arabic but they are school kids, for potato's sake). Someone should send me the video link NOW.

32. Phase one meant remarkably well;
there were just some nuts too tough to crack using phase-one tactics (note this opinion well). So momentum diminished, and there was some pushback. But nothing catastrophic, and it so far it appears to have been handled quite well (and I tend to worst case thinking).

Now, to many this was startling; the big-time players largely didn't think the opposition had much of a chance (and are probably still sweating it). Me, I figured that a people that greathearted (showing such courage and maintaining such humanity during all of this -- and after all that suffering -- is really quite touching, even to an old cynic like me) could do impressive things.

Now, phase two looks to be more military in nature, but the outcome seems inevitable. It will just take more time.

But phase two is a less spontaneous thing. Military command, coordination, communications and planning are essential (even if only regionally). And throwing the best weapons against defenses of unknown strength risks losing them to little avail, when latter they might be essential. (Any air attack forces must have good fighter support, or operate so far from any bandit bases as to be immune from counterattack.)

The end objective is clear; nibbling away to make them draw in should provide some tactical data on strength, and could be started with little resources, like by using light forces in hit-and-run or probing (with forces securing the area) attacks.

Momentum and morale important.

‘Men Found Buried Alive’ At Gaddafi Compound
Posted on March 3, 2011 by main

VIDEO

...

Libyan revolutionaries in Benghazi claim to have rescued seven prisoners that had been buried alive.

They say the group was found entombed in a small underground cell in the city’s dreaded government compound – forbidden territory for 40 years, now overrun by the forces of revolution.

The rescuers said they heard voices underground and dug through earth and freshly laid concrete to discover the seven men, some of whom were barely alive.

...

Their rescuers said some of the seven were anti-Gaddafi protesters and others were soldiers who had rebelled against the dictator.

50. This is how Gaddafi treats his protesters, he doesn't have the men to guard them, so he buries...
...them alive. I have no doubt that many many more are locked up in prisons with the key thrown away, somewhere.

5 Ways To Help Libyan Refugees
First Posted: 03- 2-11 02:02 AM | Updated: 03- 2-11 02:02 AM

...

1. The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is working to feed migrant workers fleeing into Tunisia. A plane charted by the WFP landed in Djerba, Tunisia carrying 80 tons of high energy biscuits to be distributed. The first truckload of biscuits arrived at the border on March 1.

Donors can give online to support the WFP's distribution of food to Libyan refugees.

2. To safeguard the conflict's most vulnerable victims, Save the Children has dispatched teams to provide aid to children in areas along Libya's border with Egypt. The organization will be distributing supplies and helping reunite lost children with their families.

Save the Children has set up a designated fund for Libyan children in crisis. You can make an online donation to support children.

3. AmeriCares is rushing an emergency shipment of medical supplies to the Libyan border. The supply is expected to land in Cairo, Egypt on March 3 and be rushed to the border region.

Supporters can help Libyan refugees by donating to the AmeriCares International Disaster Relief Fund.

4. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports the situation at the border is at a "crisis point" with over 14,000 refugees fleeing Libya in a single day.

The organization established a transition camp of 1,500 tents to house 12,000 people by nightfall on March 1. An airlift is expected to arrive March 3 with additional tents and supplies for 10,000 more.

Supporters can donate online to support the UNHCR's work.

5. International medical nonprofit Doctors Without Borders has dispatched a medical team to bring supplies to Libyan hospitals, help deal with the influx of wounded patients and train Libyan medical staff to cope with patients injured in future conflict.

You can contribute to Doctors Without Borders online to support the doctors and nurses lending a hand in Libya.

U.S. business community asks for leeway on Libya sanctions
Posted By Josh Rogin Thursday, March 3, 2011 - 4:52 PM

A group of U.S. companies that do business in Libya is asking the Treasury Department to take measures to protect them despite wide-ranging sanctions announced by President Barack Obama last week.

National Foreign Trade Council President William Reinsch wrote a letter on March 1 to Adam Szubin, the head of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), asking for several clarifications on how the Libya sanctions will be implemented and whether U.S. companies will be able to protect their assets there and keep paying their local employees. In the letter, obtained by The Cable, Reinsch also said he represents the U.S.-Libya Business Association, which is composed of U.S. businesses dealing with the Libyan government.

"While U.S. companies have evacuated most or all of their expatriate employees from Libya, numerous Libyan nationals and others remain in Libya and continue to maintain the operations and facilities of the companies to the extent permissible," Reinsch wrote, noting that American companies "seek authorization to provide for the continued safety, welfare, and support of their employees and contractors by paying their salaries and for other routine taxes, fees, benefits, goods and services associated with their employment."

The companies want to be able to send money to their Libyan bank accounts, which would then be used to pay salaries, income taxes, social security taxes, telecommunications bills, residential lease payments, and many other day-to-day expenses that require giving money to the Libyan government, although not directly to the Qaddafi family.

In other oil-related news, a cargo of Libyan crude oil is currently sitting in a tanker off the coast of Texas and Louisiana in the United States, with authorities unable to offload it for fear of violating recent US sanctions.

Ajdabiya demonstration
Posted on March 3, 2011 by v1d

On March 2nd , hundreds of protesters took to the streets in the eastern city of Ajdabiya to show support for freedom and to bury and honor those who died in their city. Ajdabiya was bombed by government aircraft’s on February 28, March 1, and March 2. Despite the attempts to kill and deter protesters, Ajdabiya remains under civilian control and they are still coming out- loud and proud.

The Video below demonstrates the strong will of the people and their quest for liberty.

Chants: “There is no god but God, and martyrs are loved by God!”

“There is no god but God, and Gaddafi is the enemy of God!”

“The blood of the martyrs will not go to waste!”

03 march 2011 From the Law Offices of David E. Combs

PFC Manning Forced to Strip Naked
Last night, PFC Manning was inexplicably stripped of all clothing by the Quantico Brig. He remained in his cell, naked, for the next seven hours. At 5:00 a.m., the Brig sounded the wake-up call for the detainees. At this point, PFC Manning was forced to stand naked at the front of his cell.

The Duty Brig Supervisor (DBS) arrived shortly after 5:00 a.m. When he arrived, PFC Manning was called to attention. The DBS walked through the facility to conduct his detainee count. Afterwards, PFC Manning was told to sit on his bed. About ten minutes later, a guard came to his cell to return his clothing.

This type of degrading treatment is inexcusable and without justification. It is an embarrassment to our military justice system and should not be tolerated. PFC Manning has been told that the same thing will happen to him again tonight. No other detainee at the Brig is forced to endure this type of isolation and humiliation.
