|
Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 12:16 PM by sasha031
Libertarians everywhere can rejoice! The film adaptation of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged will open in theaters nationwide on April 15 -- which of course is also the day federal income taxes are due. The Daily Caller has an interview with producer John Aglialoro about the movie which is the first of a planned trilogy. http://politicalwire.com/archives/2011/03/04/atlas_shrugged_on_the_big_screen.htmsorry mods, I have do learn to downsize pics, did this quickly, couldn't resist.

But yes, three movies... just like Lord of the Rings. Ayn Rand does for economics what Tolkien did for plausible zoology.

I predict a limited theatrical release for Atlas Shrugged. I'm surprised we're not talking about straight-to-video here. I nearly slipped into a coma watching the trailer.

...lest some parasites leech off my hard work  )
It has this really weird vibe of an obvious period piece dressed up in current clothing. They had to, or risk the wrath of the Randoids by messing with the Holy Writ by adapting it.
I'm almost ready to start a betting pool as to whether anyone will use a cell phone like a cell phone (i.e., mobile, not just a stand-in for a land-line), or at even at all.
Of course, the very slavishness to the source will make it odd and wooden to any non-TruBeliever, but that's all for the best.

The ending was gripping... made me cry. I never dreamed so many people would take that stuff to heart... really weird from my POV.
Great cinema and great boxoffice don't always know each other.

18. It was the worst book I've ever read, by FAR. |
|
Edited on Fri Mar-04-11 01:34 PM by Marr
I really enjoy good writing from authors who don't share my political beliefs, too. Some can really make their argument well in a narrative and, even if I don't agree with it, I can see where they're coming from and consider their views perfectly valid. Rand is nowhere near that category.
It wasn't just the actual moving pieces in Atlas Shrugged; the ridiculous dialogue, the unbelievable, paper-thin caricatures that are passed off as characters... it was the whole structure. She writes like a psychotic. There's a really glaring lack of logic and order.
For instance, this is how she sets up the idea that altrusim is evil:
1. Begin by assuming altruism is evil. 2. Therefore, altruism is evil.
I mean, seriously. It's trash.

20. There are rumors that the third part of the trilogy will be a musical. |
|
Yes, that's right, a musical.
But you know, part three could be a musical . . . like a Les Miserables kind of a musical,” said Aglialoro. “That’s part of the impact and I guess I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m looking at it completely different if part three is a musical with quality music that’s done in a certain way that people will like.”
Since the novel is roughly 1,200 pages, the movie adaptation was split into three parts. Part one is set to be released April 15.
Aglialoro, who held the movie rights and toiled over adapting the novel to film for 18 years, told TheDC he wants to shock audiences with the final installment:
“I mean, if you saw the play Les Miserables without the music, and then with the music, you may go in there saying, ‘oh hell, I would never want to see that great book in a musical.’ That’s going to shock a lot of people to see part 3 be a musical, and part 2 may be very different from part 3 and very different from part 1. It has to be new, you know . . . We get a freshness, a vitality about it, and yet it has the same, rock-solid principles and philosophies that we all know and love.”
From an exclusive interview with the right wing Daily Caller.

I'd bet good money that the film makes a profit.
There are enough true believers out there who won't allow the film to fail and who will buy out entire screenings to make it appear popular or bulk buy the DVD to give away.
It'll be a success in the same way that all those right-wing books make the best-seller lists even though no individuals seems to buy them.

Book is quite keen on that. (things from 60 years ago don't always translate to modern big screen movies, or the agendas of todays Randians)
