Legendary Jazz drummer Joe Morello dies at 82

For many people I know who love jazz, The Brubeck Quartet was a gateway into that world of music. Dave's huge crossover hit Take Five, written by saxophonist Paul Desmond, is the first jazz tune most people can recognize. For me, the most memorable part is the drum solo, in 5/4 time, by Joe Morello.

On the recording, Brubeck keeps time throughout, because the group was still tentative in that odd time signature. I saw them perform it live several times after that and Morello relaxed and thrived on that 5/4 time and delivered extended solos that brought the crowds to their feet.

Joe was always one of my favorites. He was tasty, and tricky, and had a great sense of humor. He's with Monk and Trane and Duke, now. O8)

5. He had a profound effect on my life.
I can hear every beat just like he's here right now.

Today I found this unrelated video. It reminded me of him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj2zzlD_cGI

I hate to see this loss. As I listen to the great sounds, I realize that this is work that requires every ounce of effort of a human being. An honest expression. We suffer through life with our physical being, but there is a transcendence. That is what this was.

6. All roads lead to Ellington...
But you have to pass Monk to get there.
