Deadbeat Carl Paladino Won’t Pay His Debts

Jeff Neumann — It's been a while since we last heard news about Carl Paladino — Buffalo's millionaire slumlord-turned failed New York gubernatorial candidate. Well, the Buffalo News has an update on our favorite Tea Partier from the north! Crazy Carl has decided that he doesn't need to pay the campaign staffers, consultants and vendors who helped him run against Andrew Cuomo. According to ex-staffers interviewed by the paper, Paladino still owes out about $130,000 in various fees and salaries. According to ex-staffer Tim Suereth:

"I would have expected a nice thank-you from Carl for all the hard work I had contributed, but instead I got screwed," said Tim Suereth, who first served as manager of internal operations and later as an unpaid volunteer.

While the campaign paid him $31,912 in salary, the millionaire businessman through direct correspondence has refused to reimburse him for $6,300 in expenses, Suereth said.

And the (quite legitimate) gripes go on and on in the story. That's bad form, Carl. Don't blame former staffers for your epic defeat, blame all of the crazy shit you said during the campaign. Maybe?

2. Actually, it's pretty typical for a lot of candidates who lose elections...
Laws are such that an individual cannot pay a campaign debt with personal funds.

The candidate could donate some more of his money to the campaign and pay off the bills.

I got stiffed from more than a losing democratic candidate.

Of course, anyone going into a campaign should know that.

I understood that going in.

The difference was my guy was just like one of us, a guy with a mortgage and bills and already maxed out on pursuing his dream and I guess my dream as well.

This guy, this candidate is a millionaire who took advantage of the people who believed in him...

Of course we should not forget that this whiny staffer was paid 31k for four or five months work.

3. Sue Lowden (R-NV) is refusing to pay her campaign debts too.

Sue Lowden Campaign Debt Reportedly Can't Be Paid By Former Senate Candidate

A month after a process server tracked down Sue Lowden during a Las Vegas deposition, the former Republican front-runner for the 2010 U.S. Senate nomination is claiming in court documents that she can't pay her campaign debts.

She has been paying off campaign bills at a "substantially reduced amount" because she has "limited resources at this time," according to her attorney in Colorado, where she was sued by a GOP media services firm.

SNIP

Documents obtained by Vegas Confidential in December indicated Lowden had more than $750,000 in campaign debts at that time, including to top-level staffers.

SNIP

Vitale's attorney, John Head, said in a complaint that Lowden reportedly is worth between $50 million and $200 million.
