We did not get to the capitol in Madison yesterday. My daughter was in the final stages of moving to a new apartment, and she had to get everything out last night. Her cat, the most sensitive part of the move, was the last to go. She told me that she got into some serious traffic around the capitol. Every street leading from the capitol square to the interstates was clogged with cars honking, "this is what democracy looks like."
I love it.
She sent me a blog post that her former roommate found. It has some interesting comparisons between Walker and another famous Wisconsinite that no one there likes to discuss: Joseph McCarthy.
http://globalbrief.ca/jeremisuri/2011/03/13/the-new-mccarthyism/"Sixty yeas ago, an angry, ambitious, argumentative Wisconsin politician burst on to the national scene in the United States. He was a plain-speaking, hard working "two-fisted" figure who drew accolades for his willingness to brawl with established, elite and entrenched bastions of power."
The article goes on to discuss how wealthy businessmen and prominent media moguls were some of McCarthy's earliest supporters, and how the teabagger party has revitalized McCarthy's playbook. Walker, like McCarthy, will overreach. But before he goes down, he will do more damage.
Let's bring him down quickly.
