Scraping By On $7.5 Million

A new survey by Fidelity Investments shows that rich people only feel rich if they have about $7.5 million. Any less, presumably, they feel like the rest of us losers. With 5% of the country now controlling 56% of its wealth, millionaires feel more upbeat than they have for years. But listen to Samuel Johnson: "Avarice is always poor." Let them eat cake, laced with shame.

4. Cry me a river.

Read an interesting article recently (might have been in Atlantic Monthly?) about how people most of us would consider filthy rich aren't necessarily happy that they're rich -- in part because they can afford everything so everything seems ordinary. For most of us, eating at an expensive restaurant would be a special treat reserved for a significant occasion (if we could afford it at all). But the very wealthy eat at expensive restaurants all the time; dropping a couple hundred bucks for dinner wouldn't be a big deal at all, so it isn't special. If we want a new car we have to take out a loan, and maybe we have to settle for a used one -- or get along with the old one or none at all. If you're rich and you want a new car you just go buy one, for cash, whatever kind you want. The rich have nothing to look forward to because they can have whatever they want.

Still, I'm not about to waste any sympathy on people who "need" at least $7.5 million to feel rich, or who are unhappy and bored because they can afford whatever they want.

5. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm getting damn sick and
tired of my "superiors". Calling common working folk like firefighters, police, teachers low life names makes me think someone has too much money and it is about time to fix that problem. God is no respecter of persons much less money and I'll bet some of those name callers consider themselves Christians or something to that effect. The world is worse for their existance.

8. My only question: What kind of wine goes best with these rich people? (Other than a nice Chianti.)
And can they be eaten with the fingers, or should the fingers be eaten separately?

Okay, that's TWO questions, but I don't want to offend Miss Manners. Maybe I should research it and write a book -- maybe something like "To Serve Our Superiors" (volume II of the "To Serve Man" series)...
