Mohammed Nabbous 1983-2011

Today we received the news that Mohammed Nabbous, a citizen media activist and one of the great figures of the February 17th youth revolutionary movement, was killed by a Qadaffi sniper while covering the first hours of fighting in Benghazi. His death represents a terrible loss for the movement and for the future of Libya.

We met Nabbous briefly, soon after arriving in Benghazi. As a leader and a member of the Transitional National Council, he gathered a progressive group of activists around him and organized the institution known as the February 17th Revolution Youth Media Center. In that grimy warren of hallways and former interrogation cells, reclaimed from the regime and plastered floor to ceiling with graffiti slogans and cartoons, his name was intoned gravely, even reverently.

In the early days of the rebellion, when regime reprisals were still a possibility for dissenters and fear was widespread, Nabbous single-handedly built a megaphone to the outside world— part television studio, internet relay, and command and control center, streaming images from Benghazi’s Tahrir Square 24 hours a day.

His bravery inspired others to work to give the revolution a voice, and they turned to him constantly for direction; his cell phone rang perpetually. One look could tell you he got very little sleep, if any, in the constant manic flurry of activity required to carry the revolution’s message forward. Despite this he found the time to address our needs, and thank us with deep sincerity for coming to Libya.

He cut a striking figure, tall and suave with a British accent acquired at Oxford, where he studied engineering, and spoke with quickfire brilliance. His was a singular dedication to the revolution and a better future for his country, for which he gave his life, and we mourn him.

4. This guy was the face of the rebellion for all intents, he did daily shows...
...and covered practically every Benghazi protest. Tens of thousands of people. Every day. For a month. He is a hero.

12. Probably, but this guy was the face of the revolution.
There are likely a lot of young students that Gaddafi is using as forced human shields.

The question is, are they afraid to die? Or are they afraid to lose the battle?

20. I followed him since the very first days on AlHurrah TV....
he's a year younger than my daughter.

Breaks my heart but I know his courage will live on in the youth of Libya.

He was more afraid to lose the battle than his life.

RIP Mo

21. Another good post about Mohammed Nabbous.
http://feb17.info/editorials/in-loving-memory-of-mohammed-nabbous/

“A Candle loses nothing by lighting another Candle”

This was Mohammed “Mo” Nabbous’s favorite quote according to one of his friends and our colleague here at Feb17.info. These words clearly depict his dedicated efforts to ensuring that the world saw the truth about Libya.

Mohammed was the first to broadcast live from from Benghazi in the early days of the revolution. In his remarkable efforts, he became the voice of the people in Libya and the eyes of the world into the country.

After capturing the world’s attention, Mo launched the first independent internet tv station in Libya: Libya Alhurra TV. Throughout his broadcasts this past month, he was able to show the world first hand of the crimes that the Gaddafi regime was committing against innocent people. He also successfully coordinated efforts with viewers from all around the world to get humanitarian aid to people and assisted the media’s efforts to getting information. From finding pilots and planes to fly out patients to hospitals in Egypt and to working with key UN officials — Mohammed used Libya Al Hurra TV as a platform to helping anyone he could.

There is a neat graphic about his famous quote.

24. We'll all carry his voice in our heads, for the rest of our lives.
Raspy and frenetic, almost like a manic smoker, but after a few seconds you knew it was from passion, and it was from lack of sleep, and it was from talking nonstop for weeks. I hadn't heard that quality of voice for years and years, and I have to say, it gave me hope and a little spark.

Carry on Mohammed, we can still hear you.
