Qatar Says It Will Join Libya Military Operations as Arabs Back Offensive
Qatar Says It Will Join Libya Military Operations as Arabs Back Offensive
By Vivian Salama - Mar 20, 2011 12:12 PM ET

Middle Eastern leaders backed an offensive by international forces seeking to protect Libyan civilians as President Muammar Qaddafi said his country would become hell for the “monsters” attacking it.

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasim Al Thani said the emirate will join the U.S., U.K., Canada, France and Italy against Libya, making it the first Arab country to commit military forces. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Arab participation in talks in Paris yesterday “extraordinarily important” and said more can be expected from Middle East states.

“Patrolling the skies from afar is fine but they must not enter the country,” Osama Lamloum, 58, a sales manager at an Egyptian advertising firm, said in Cairo today. “How can someone bomb civilians? Enough bloodshed!”

Libya was pummeled yesterday by more than 110 Tomahawk cruise missiles in the first phase of an assault dubbed “Operation Odyssey Dawn.” The coalition struck after European, U.S. and Arab officials gathered in Paris yesterday to discuss the crisis. Leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Iraq, Qatar and Morocco participated in yesterday’s talks.

1. Considering the Arab League asked for this military action
it's about time an Arab country actually committed to contribute.

Or am I missing something?

15. If they don't want 'bombardment of citizens' what do they think
those participating should do? Qadaffi is the one who was bombarding his people. It's unrealistic to believe there won't be consequences to this action as Obama alluded to.

If they don't like what those who answered their call for help are doing, then what the fuck would they do differently?

23. This is precisely why I thought it would be in our best interest to
let the Arab League take the lead on this. Now they can now point fingers and say the west is once again attacking Muslims. We should have forced their hand and made them step up and take the lead role.

27. That's a weaselly statement by Arab League chief.
Khaddafi was decimating civilians. Perhaps some have been injured or even killed by the military action the Arab League asked for. But if it stopped Khaddafi from imposing much more massive casualties, I mean come the fuck on. This is what the Arab League asked for. I don't think the US would be there if they hadn't asked.

That Arab League chief is trying to have it both ways. I predict that he will find it harder to get support from the west next time, unless there is more desire to go in for our own reasons.

3. Now if they were the lead and we were the passive sideline supporters then fine.
But we cannot allow ourselves to get into another "cakewalk" like Iraq or Afghanistan.

9. Prove it. Give us the timeline of how the no-fly zone was imposed and who was behind it.
I guarantee you it wasn't the US who is behind this notion. Quite the opposite, we brought up the rear.

Great Britain first proposed it, then France took up the battle to have the UN resolution for a no-fly zone approved by the Security Council.

Edit - hit post too soon - there are a lot of people around here who seem to believe what you posted as sarcasm. That's why you need the tag. :)
