Fraudulent marriage for immigration purposes VERSUS consensual arranged marriage
Suppose that a marriage is arranged for two adults who consent to the arrangement, and who won't meet each other until their wedding. Suppose that there is no country that both of the two adults are citizens of.

If it quickly becomes clear that the couple is very much incompatible, and they quickly get a divorce, then how is it possible to confirm that it wasn't a fraudulent marriage designed to facilitate immigration?

Do immigration authorities simply not accept sponsorship of a spouse until after the spouses have had some specified minimum amount of time to get to know each other?

Do immigration authorities give special privileges to people whose ancestors practiced arranged marriage?

2. There was apparently an unrec, because we're down to 2 recs.
Any comments to explain a rec or to explain an unrec?

5. I suspect it would depend on the country
and since the US is such a suspicious bureaucratically run clusterfuck, I'm thinking they would make the two parties go to their former countries. But I don't really actually know that.

I think that we can agree that words are more meaningful than a fluctuating non-negative integer indicating the overall recommendations.

Here's a link back to your thread. Let's hope that this link will recruit more elaborate, articulate replies to your thread.

7. It's an interesting question. The divorce stats for arranged marriages are pretty low
because of cultural and societal pressures within those immigrant communities so I'm guessing the immigration authorities haven't been presented with these types of questions too often.

But I sure as shit know that as soon as those people who want to engage in a "fraudulent" marriage discover that the State Dept is allowing exceptions for those who were in "arranged" (forced?) marriages, then all those marriages that were for immigration purposes solely, will become "arranged" marriages very quickly.

11. True, but they wouldn't let Europeans or other cultures where it is not generally done
to get away with it. An American marrying a British person could hardly get the authorities to buy "our parents arranged it" (unless they were from cultures that arranged it- don't want to overlook that American citizens and British citizens may be from Indian or Pakistan in background).

10. Whether it was a fraud would depend on the surrounding circumstances
So I'd think if the people came from a culture where arranged marriages happen, then it would not be looked on as fraud. If the marriage takes place the way it normally does.

Though the parents involved might consider the ability to live in the other country as one of the factors for picking that spouse for their child and the parents with the spouse to be who has the residence status in another country might use it as a good point for why one should want their kid for their kid's spouse.

Not likely to be the only "selling point" though.

Rather complex, there.
