YOU'RE Paying for THEIR Tax Breaks
Was watching Ed Schultz and Rachael Maddow tonite reporting on the egregious and blatant crap so many GOP governors and legislatures are pulling, to reward Corporations and the Wealthy with more tax cuts, while upping taxes on the poor, seniors and others, and taking away needed services for everyone and slashing and burning state government.

Got me thinking idly up bumper sticker type slogans that might get the point across to those who have been hoodwinked into supporting these crooks.

The one in the tagline above came to me most naturally...You're paying for their tax breaks...Short and sweet and pretty well sums it up.

But it also is likely to be misinterpreted by knuckleheads who would probably think THEIR refers to all those Welfare Queens and those Damn Pampered Schoolteachers....So maybe it's not such a great one.

But somehow we gotta boil this down so our side can spread the word and wake the misled and the apathetic from their trances.

1. it is a certainty that it will be misinterpreted without defining who "they" is
No doubt about it.

8. I guess it's a matter of verbal rhythm versusd content
The original sort of sings better than "You're Paying for Tax Breaks for the Wealthy and Corporations" but isn't as accurate or clear

3. Paris Hilton Called. She Said, "Thanks For The Tax Break!!!"
Also could work for Charlie Sheen or any other millionaire who helps disprove the right-wing meme that the rich are all job-creators and that they're all deserving of the money the Republican Party dumps on them by the truckfull.

Only possible problem is that some boneheads will say "Duh yeah and The Donald Deserves it. He's so cool."

Otherwise it's great. "You're hired." LOL

12. It's a small part of the story.
"They" have more than what they'd pay in taxes LOANED to the government ... at tax-preferred interest. That interest is one of the larger parts of the deficit. So, they avoid driving DOWN the deficit and benefit FROM it.

15. You're right....But we also need tio keep things on a basic level
Part of the reason people often don't "get it" is because it all gets so complicated that people's eyes glaze over, or data and intertpretations get open to distortions.

The point of this exercise in the OP is to find ways to cut to the chase (so to speak) so boneherads can understand what's happening.

(Frankly, when it comes to understanding all of the the baroque intricacies of finance, I'm in the bonehead category myself.)

16. Right, and we also have to remember that we, ourselves, have learned all of this
piece by piece, over the years.

We can't impart all of that at once.... it doesn't compute, and that is why the glazing of eyes... they have nothing to hang it on.

18. Hopefully there's a way to connect peope to the underlying common sense
I try to put the complications in terms of real life to get a handle on it.

Let's say, for example, a family has two twins. One is a little more charismatic, better looking and basically luckier than the other. But they're both fundamentally the same otherwise.

And their family has a somewhat limited budget. And they arbitrarily decides that the "lucky twin" deserves more, so he is given more advantages such as bigger helpings at dinner, new clothes (while the other twin gets Salvation Army cast offs), a bigger allowance, a tutor for classes he has problems with, etc.

No justification for the favoritism. Does that make sense?

I don't know if that's a good example, but somehow we have to make clearer the real-world consequences of seemingly obscure policies and patterns.

21. I think there are all kinds of things that work, and yours is a good idea.
I have tried to post ideas here which have proven to work, but DUers simply aren't really interested in "conversion"... it is so much more fun to call people "the stupid" and thereby feel superior, rather than to actually try to change the underlying dynamic.

You are off to a good start, and I hope you will compile a list of these ideas. Maybe we can find a small group of activists who actually want to implement them, and find a way to get them to go viral.

We need to simplify and separate.

Whether one supports the war(s), doesn't change the tax issue and what the GOP are trying to ram through

24. Actually, it is RW....I was held captive in front of Faux yesterday morning, and I heard exactly the
same arguments against the Libyan action as I have heard here on DU.

How's that for scary?

And, yes... it needs to be separated from the economic stuff in this situation.

The defense budget is obviously bloated and needs drastic "reform". But that does not correlate directly with this. As someone else pointed out, those missiles are already "in stock".

29. Bullshit. I'm not paying for the tax cuts to the rich.
My grandchildren will pay for it. All I'm doing is voting for the guys who borrow the money from the banks (because we gave tax breaks to the people who own the banks). At worse, I pay the interest on those loans. I'm sure I'll be dead before America can get around to paying down the principal on the loans.

Okay maybe technically your grandchildren will pay it instead of you.

Wanna explain the complexities of debt financing in quick ways that ordinary people can understand and relate to, and which will prevent them from supporting GOP CONservative policies?
