Detective Sgt. Arthur P. Dietrich of Barney Miller fame has turned in his badge. He was only sixty-five. He did great stand up and I loved his dry dead pan delivery. http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-12-22/bay-area/25295207_1_police-officers-barney-miller-detectiveRIP edit to add link..

Yes, he died last Monday. I had not heard a word about it until today, when I stumbled on it. I guess were too busy talking about Justin Bieber or some other trivial bullshit.

I loved him on Barney Miller. He carried so many great and comic scenes in that show. I wish I could find a YouTube of the one I'm thinking of, but I don't remember the name of the episode. The detectives are discussing why they became cops. When Barney asks Dietrich his reasons, the intellectual Dietrich replies (in his best deadpan of course), "Well, I always wanted to be the best at everything I did. I wanted to be a doctor, but I knew I couldn't be the best doctor. I wanted to be a lawyer, but I knew I couldn't be the best lawyer. So, I became a cop." Of course the other detectives were left to simply marvel at Dietrich's comic arrogance. - So long, Steve "Detective Arthur Dietrich" Landesberg, and thanks for the high brow humor!
