1. Well, it is none of the above. |
|
But it is a contrived "holiday."
The same way July 4th is.

The Declaration has nothing to do with founding our country, it was the Founders' way of saying "Screw you, George!"
It also was not signed on the 4th by everyone. In fact John Hancock signed it on the 3rd, and a couple signers didn't sign it until after the Revolutionary War.
So we are celebrating a day that was contrived as "The founding date of our nation."

10. Who said anything about the founding of our country? |
|
It is Independence Day, or the date chosen to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Nothing to do with the founding and never has.

In fact technically, ALL holidays are contrived.
The facts behind them are far removed from the "legend" or "traditional" stuff.

July 4th is an actual US holiday since 1778, in observance of an actual historical event. Kwanzaa is contrived the same way Festivus is.

traditions, were "contrived" at some point...
and as Joseph Campbell said, "It is time for a new story" (or traditions) and Kwanzaa is a good new tradition

20. One of the most embarassing moments of my life... |
|
was in South Africa on business as a colleague began wishing people a "Happy Kwanzaa" this was met with either confused silence and a smirk or laughter. One of the American educated among the locals eventually pulled him aside and said he was making an ass of himself.
