Have you seen ads for "oweno.com"?
(I have CNN on in the background as I work and just saw an ad that said "Hugh Jidette for President," then showing the www.oweno.com at the end. It's sponsored by the Peter Peterson Foundation -- about which I know nothing and have no time to read up on now -- but I have a feeling we're going to see a bunch of these ads, and wondered if anyone is familiar with this foundation and their interests.)

About OweNO

OweNo is a national public awareness campaign whose mission is to educate Americans about the causes and consequences of the projected growth in federal debt levels and engage them in a national movement to address these important fiscal challenges.

America faces a growing crisis — our $13.6 trillion federal debt is expected to grow to astonishing levels in future years, threatening the economic health of our nation, and particularly our nation’s most vulnerable citizens and the next generation who will inherit our debt. But if we act now to put together a plan for our fiscal future – and if we work together across party lines to implement it – we can start to fix the problem, live within our means and create a better nation for our kids.

The American people have the power to make a difference. That’s why the Peter G. Peterson Foundation launched OweNo, a nationwide public awareness campaign. Through the campaign, we seek to educate Americans about the consequences of our soaring debt and deficits and build consensus among concerned citizens of all political persuasions on the need for a plan that embodies sensible solutions. And, most importantly, we will engage people across the country in a movement for change, empowering them with the information to make a difference by calling on Washington to put a plan in place that addresses our growing fiscal challenges.

About Hugh Jidette

Hugh Jidette – a play on the phrase “Huge Debt” – is a fictional presidential candidate who has been created to capture the attention of the nation and bring to light the facts about our federal fiscal challenges and the threats they pose to our nation’s economic future. As his name suggests, Hugh Jidette is a satirical character, and his policy positions sound strange and unbelievable. However, all of the facts and figures that Hugh cites are entirely true (unfortunately). He and his absurd platform ironically represent the sad truth about the “status quo” and our nation’s current fiscal path. Through a humorous advertising campaign that drives home a serious message, we hope to inform millions of Americans about our fiscal challenges and engage them in calling on Washington for real solutions.

The Peter G. Peterson Foundation

The Peter G. Peterson Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization established by Pete Peterson – businessman, philanthropist, and former U.S. Secretary of Commerce – dedicated to raising awareness about America’s fiscal challenges and accelerating action on them. The OweNo campaign is one of several awareness and consensus-building projects spearheaded by the foundation. Learn more about the Peterson Foundation at www.PGPF.org.

3. Ugh, thanks. People are going to have even more overt right-wing ideology....
shoved down their collective throats with this "campaign" then.

From Wikipedia page:

"Peterson has, throughout his career, been an avid supporter of cuts to the deficit, which, for him, primarily translates into cuts to "entitlement spending."<3><4><5> This includes opposition to health care reform of any sort, as he was a firm opponent of the Bill Clinton health care plan of 1993..."

5. Interesting.
I interpreted the name "Hugh Jidette" as "Huge Idiot."

Looks like I was right.

Gee, if they want to cut the federal debt, I'm sure they would be on board with slashing the DoD budget to 1/2 or 1/4 of what it currently is, right?

7. Indeed. I always have the TV on mute, as I did throughout that ad...
so I never heard the name spoken aloud and didn't even take time to process it. I just went to www.oweno.com and then came here to see if anyone else was aware of this new "campaign."

Now that I know what it's about, I can mute it even when I AM listening. ;)
