Newark woman tied pit bull to railing, left N.J. for a week, prosecutors say
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/03/newark_woman_tied_pit_bull_to.html

NEWARK — A Newark woman accused of animal cruelty in a pit bull abuse case tied the dog to a railing and left New Jersey for more than a week, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Kisha Curtis could now face punishment for a felony — up to 18 months in jail and a $3,000 fine — if convicted of dumping the severely starved 1-year-old pit bull named Patrick at the Garden Spires apartment building in Newark.

The 27-year-old woman has been charged with the torment and torture of a living creature, said Frank Rizzo, superintendent of the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Curtis was in the Passaic County jail on an unrelated charge and was expected to be transferred to Essex County jail, according to acting Prosecutor Carolyn Murray. Her bail is set at $10,000.

1. She should get the same treatment.....
and I figure a month should get the point across good and proper.

No excuses for this!

2. There was a letter writing campaign last week, urging they go for the felony. The first pix of
Patrick that I saw were the worst I've ever seen.

Poor baby. You can follow his progress here: http://www.youtube.com/user/GSVSPetHospital (It's videos from the veterinary hospital that's taking care of him.)

Oh - the article notes they will be going for the felony charge!

8. More about Patrick.
He was about 10 minutes away from certain death but for the fact that the super found him in time.

He was named Patrick because he was found on St. Patrick's Day and obviously enjoyed the luck of the Irish.

Patrick has a Facebook Page.

10. Until they begin to prosecute these sick people with harsh penalties this will continue.
It is time for people to step up and demand that these poor animals have the right to NOT be abused!

12. Like the wording: "the torment and torture of a living creature." It should be applied to all.

16. I hope she goes to prison for a very long time. Society
does not need people who do such abhorrent things. I will never understand how people can do such awful things to animals and to each other. I'm waiting to hear back from our local shelter because I recently found out that they have a special needs dog who has been there since Christmas Eve and I really want to adopt her. I'm sure Patrick will eventually find a loving home, too.

17. Hopefully everyone who comes out to offer a home to Patrick
will consider going to their own local shelter to adopt a dog there. Patrick, bless his little heart, has thousands looking after him. There are, however, thousands of dogs who need help too.

Good luck with your own adoption. You'll have to let us know how it goes. Thanks for considering a homeless pet.

18. You're so right and I hope everyone who inquires about
adopting Patrick and doesn't get him adopts a different dog, too. I am so looking forward to adopting this new one and I know my other dog will love her, too. I posted about her in the pets group, with pictures - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=243x44508 Thank you, too!

19. What I need to know is who listened to that dog bark
and did nothing. We had a similar situation years ago. The dog barked continuously until we rescued it. The animal control, who were contacted regularly didn't do much of anything. A couple of years ago, we had another situation that was the same. This time we rescued the dog within 24 hours. As usual animal control did practically nothing. However, when you hear a dog barking continuously night and day, it's time to go and investigate.
