Pssst: Looking for work? WANTED: U.S. workers for crippled Japan nuke plant
A U.S. recruiter is hiring nuclear power workers in the United States to help Japan gain control of the stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant, which has been spewing radiation.

The qualifications: Skills gained in the nuclear industry, a passport, a family willing to let you go, willingness to work in a radioactive zone.

The rewards: Higher than normal pay and the challenge of solving a major crisis.

1. If they can actually recruit people with the proper qualifications
who have the skills to help end this nightmare, then I'm all for it. I just hope they don't bring in a lot of Homer Simpson types.

2. I am hoping which ever company is hiring is not taking out "dead peasant" insurance.
Apparently not enough skilled reactor workers in Japan????

5. There are, of course, many skilled reactor workers in Japan

and several hundred have been working on this problem at one time or another. But given the results so far, it seems increasingly clear to me that getting these reactors under control will require an international effort. Since the units were designed by GE, and similar reactors have been used in other countries (particularly the US), it would seem sensible to bring in engineers from other countries who have had experience with these types of reactors, and who might be able to think of effective approaches that Japanese engineers have not thought of. At this stage, living 100 miles downwind from this complex, I don't care WHO gets this under control, just as long as it gets under control.

8. 100 Miles Downwind is Too Close
Maybe it would be a good time to visit some relatives in the States or something.

12. Believe me, right now I'd love to pack it all up
and get the hell out of Dodge. A lot of the non-Japanese that I know have done just that. But I've got various obligations right now that are holding me back, and no one around me seems to be panicking, or even overly concerned. The radiation data supplied by the national and prefectural (state) governments, research institutes, and universities all say that this area is OK, even when the wind is blowing from the wrong direction. My airline company has notified me that they are sticking to a normal flight schedule to and from Tokyo-Narita because the IAEA, IATA, State Department, etc., have all said that the risk level is still not too bad, and the Embassy is for now sticking with its 50-mile evacuation advisory, although it is also advising against "non-essential" travel to my prefecture.

10. I don't have any formal training, just basic engineering instruction...
But if the pay was good, I'd seriously consider going.

It's not like I have a lot tying me down. Don't have very strong family ties or many off-line friends, and don't expect to live much past 50 anyway.

Sign me up! (It's gotta pay a lot more than the pittance I'm making now...)

14. Knights of the Future
:( We are still a very primitive & arrogant culture. We think we're the Bringers of the Wonders of Nuclear for future generations. Just as good a chance we are creating the next Easter Island of the solar system.

15. I volunteer those who still advocate for nuclear energy
They think its so wonderful that I think that they should go clean that crap up in Japan and report back to us on how safe nuclear energy is.
