Afghan Mob Kills 10 United Nations Workers
KABUL, Afghanistan — Protesters angered by the burning of a Koran by a fringe American pastor in Florida mobbed offices of the United Nations in northern Afghanistan on Friday, killing ten foreign staff members and beheading two of the victims, according to an Afghan police spokesman. Five Afghans were also killed.

The attack began when hundreds of demonstrators, some of them armed, poured out of mosques after Friday Prayer and headed to the headquarters of the United Nations in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. They disarmed the guards and overran the compound, according to Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, spokesman for Gen. Daoud Daoud, the Afghan National Police commander for northern Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, Kieran Dwyer, said the attack had occurred during a demonstration. “We can confirm there have been casualties, including U.N. personnel, but the situation on the ground remains very confusing,” he said. He added that Staffan de Mistura, the top United Nations official in Afghanistan, was en route to Mazar-i-Sharif.

3. Screw those lunatic murderers.
Yes, burning the Koran is unwise because it may well make stupid, wicked people do stupid, wicked things.

But we should never lose sight of the fact that the real villains of the peace are the ones who teach that violence is an appropriate response to burning the Koran.

4. So...let me get this straight...
...the actions of one asshole - 13,000 miles away - gives validation to a mob of people descending on innocents and killing\beheading them??

I just want to fully understand what you are saying.

8. What I am saying is that preacher has some responsibility for this..
I am in no way giving any credence to the murderers that committed the crime of murder but by the same token knowing what we know of radical Muslims, it is very irresponsible to bait and instigate them in such a manner. IMO that preacher has blood on his hands and it will NEVER wash off.

7. Let's say a mob of right wingers descends on a mosque in the US and kills 10 people
in retaliation for this. I assume your response will be 'screw those lunatic Muslims.'

2. Without a counteracting secular force to arbitrate views, people get out of hand.

10. Meaning what? That there should be no arbiter between the different faiths?

If there is not someone who is free from either camp, they will be accused of being unfair. Someone objective is needed.
