The Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. military began on Friday a three-day intensive search for those still missing three weeks after a quake-triggered massive tsunami wiped out a swath of coastal cities and towns in Japan's northeast.

Using dozens of ships and helicopters, about 18,000 SDF personnel and about 7,000 U.S. military personnel will engage in the operation, with members of the police, the Japan Coast Guard and fire departments also taking part, according to the Defense Ministry and other sources.

The areas covered include shores that were largely submerged or remain under water and mouths of major rivers in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, which were hit hard by the March 11 tsunami, within about 18 kilometers from the coastline....(more)

6. 66 found. 11,938 killed, 15,478 missing
http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/04/82804.html
The Japanese Self-Defense Forces, the U.S. military and other rescue workers recovered 31 bodies Saturday as their intensive search for the missing in tsunami-hit northeastern coastal areas continued into the second day of a three-day operation.

The figure brought to 66 the total number of bodies recovered over two days from areas devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

The bulk of Saturday's operation was held in and around Ishinomaki, one of the worst affected cities in Miyagi Prefecture. They searched around an elementary school where many pupils went missing after the tsunami, while some 50 divers from the SDF, the Japan Coast Guard and other entities were deployed to the nearby Kitakami River, the largest in northeastern Japan.

Some 18,000 SDF personnel and about 7,000 U.S. military personnel, as well as members of police, the JCG and fire departments, continued their involvement in the operation.

A total of about 1,100 people have so far accepted the town's offer of evacuation among the around 9,400 residents taking shelter in local facilities -- more than half the town's prequake population of 17,666 as of Feb. 28.
