Hey, folks! Another Friday Afternoon Challenge comes your way: Don’t Mess with Me!
Below are action figures from the Bible, as imagined by six artists. Identify the action figure. Extra credit for identifying the artists (some are a little difficult)!

4. No New Testament here so it's not John the Baptist.
#3 is not Abraham and Isaac. I see why you went to David and Bathsheba on #4 but it is not.

No Judith...

You might want to think about the Book of Judges on at least one of these...

Lotsa wars in the Old Testament!

I obviously got a LOT out of the few summers I spent in Vacation Bible School at the Presbyterian Church in Brownwood, TX that my uncle and aunt belonged to!

Funny how this kinda stuff gets back into your life much later on!

And # 1 has got to be John the Baptist's head on a platter that was requested by ...Solome..?

11. Two action figures
Deborah and Jael.

Deborah was the Judge who led the Israelites to victory over the Canaanites. After the battle Jael killed the Canaanite general Sisera by driving a tent peg into his head. You go, girls!

29. No, but I see someone's guess and the answer below
I would have made the same guess of Donatello.

Looked it up and here's a page with them side by side - fascinating:

http://www.museumsinflorence.com/musei/museum_of_bargello.html

Yet another museum I didn't make it to on my all too brief trip to Florence many years ago.

38. (sigh) So many Americans don't know about the Bargello!
It's all David at the Accademia, the Duomo, and off to the Uffizi for two Botticelli...and that's it!

The Bargello, the San Marco Convent (Fra Angelico), the Brancacci Chapel (Massacio and Masolino), the Santa Maria Novella Church (Massacchio, Ghirlandaio and Brunelleschi) have so much to offer...

57. There's sooo much to see in Florence
We were there so briefly and actually stayed at a hotel in Fiesole (how we ended up doing that is a story in itself).

Fiesole has its own charms and treasures and I'm glad we wound up there to experience that.

We had half-board at the hotel so would take the bus back up the hill and enjoy the brief walk in the village atmosphere (and much cooler temperature) to our hotel. It was a small family owned place. The dining room was on the top floor with windows all around and a spectacular view of Florence. The food was traditional home style northern Italian. It was a wonderful place to re-center after a hectic day and stretch out and fully appreciate the beauty of where we were.

And it was fascinating when I later watched "Room with a View" and recognized Fiesole when they showed it in the film.

39. #6 is Joshua
but not at Jericho. It's the victory of Joshua over the Amorite kings (same war, different battle).

I figured it out from the moon and sun. Joshua asked God to stop the moon and the sun so that he could finish the battle in daylight. The painting is by Nicolas Poussin, and it's in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

(I knew those years of Sunday School and VBS would pay off!)

47. It's a device that allows people to take a picture of what is online and then find it.
So it enables people who have Android to simply take a photo (I guess by cell phone) of a picture on the Internet and find out what it is and who did it.

Ok, I get it. I am so far behind in my technology skills that I thought maybe just a phone or operating system for a small device. But, whoa this makes the art challenge a lot different.

It would be nice if all agreed to put their androids down, for the Art Challenge, if they have one!

Thanks CTyankee. Like everybody else, I so appreciate what you bring to us each Friday.

56. I hope it is fun and rewarding at the same time!
I love the stories of people who saw the images and knew them from some distant past reference and had dredged that up!

We all come to art with our own minds and memories. How often doesn't art play into that mind and tinker with it! I really agree with John Armstrong who reminds us that contemplation helps us "get" to the gist of art...

48. Hey, tell me how you found this painting! Rosso de Fiorentino was such a crazy guy
(he lived with a baboon for a time in Florence!), it is hard to believe that he prospered in the Mannerist era...but this painting is something of wonder. All those bodies floating around in space, the total chaos of the painting, the anger...I just recoil, but I can see how some could like this. It IS energetic and galvanizing, if it weren't for the "candy mint" colors of the basic painting itself! It lacks the basis of reality that the early baroque, such as Caravaggio, gave to his paintings.

I don't want to disparage it entirely. It is a classic example of Mannerism, in many ways. Bodeis floating in space, a highly charged emotional atmosphere...

50. hahaha! a baboon! omg...

I looked at it and thought it was Mannerist by the colors -- almost washed out -- compared to my BFF Caravaggio. The tortuous bodily positions. The "floating" feeling of the figures. Looked up Mannerist Moses and battle and there it was.

Will have to check out Rosso de Fiorentino and his baboon roomie a bit more

Thanks as always for a good challenge CTyankee!
