NH Repuke leader calls Bishop protesting cuts for the poor a "pedophile pimp"
NH GOP leader calls bishop a ‘pedophile pimp’
By Associated Press
Friday, April 1, 2011 - Updated 36 minutes ago

CONCORD, N.H. - New Hampshire’s House Republican leader says Roman Catholic Bishop John McCormack is a "pedophile pimp" who should’ve been led from the Statehouse in handcuffs after speaking at a rally criticizing the budget.

Rep. D.J. Bettencourt of Salem posted the comment Friday on Facebook in an apparent reference to McCormack’s tenure as head of the Manchester diocese during the clergy sex abuse scandal.

In 2002, McCormack averted unprecedented criminal charges against the diocese by agreeing that it had harmed children by moving abusive priests from parish to parish.

Bettencourt later said that while his language was colorful, he stands by the sentiment.

A spokesman for the diocese says Bettencourt’s comments are false and detract from the real issue — the state’s obligation to care for the poor.

3. Yes.
And it's contagious....at least among republicans.

5. Yes, they have
I think they know it's all going to keep slipping away and it's driven them into complete madness.

The only question is whether their former reasonable party members will vote Democratic or just sit the whole thing out.

My guess is that it will be the latter unless they can come up with another hot button issue for churchgoing morons.

I think Bettencourt can kiss his cushy job goodbye in 2012. No one can insult a Bishop like that in heavily Catholic New England and get away with it unless that Bishop is actually being tried for pedophilia, and even then they have to tread carefully.

What a complete asshole that man is.

2. This is sickening.
Republicans are turning on their own now. They are going to keep going. They won't have any supporters, but once they get voted out of office, there will be nothing left...

4. Ouch. Probably not far from the truth, though. That scandal has ...
greatly diminished that church's moral credibility.

12. You don't regard this statement as prejudiced? Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

You appear to be of the same species as the Repuke in question here, only not as brave or stupid, whichever.

13.  It is a justifiable statement based upon the role ...
of bishops in this country in protecting child molesting priests. They have cared more about protecting the image of the church than dealing with victims of abuse.

The same sentiment used by this rethug has been justifiably used by me and others here when bishops have condemned gay rights, marriage equality, planned parenthood, reproductive rights, and other issues. I see no reason to change that judgment now.

In fact, the church's child abuse scandal has so diminished its credibility in virtually every sphere of moral influence, it would be better if the bishops stayed inside their cathedrals and left the crusade to those who are not so morally bankrupt.

17. No it's not. He said it purely because the bishop was protesting the draconian
cuts to the poor and disabled that are in the NH budget that just passed the House there. The reason he said it makes it a despicable thing to say.

9. That's right, piss off the Catholic Church, you Republifuckers!
Is that the plan? Mobilize the kook Baptists and other Catholic Church breakaways against the Catholics, the Jews, the workers, the poor, the gay, the depressed, the mentally challenged, etc. Sort of like what Hitler did - wasn't that guy some religious kook too?

And it sounds like this particular Bishop was one of the good guys who decided not to hide everything. (Although one can never be too sure that things aren't still hidden).

14. I've noticed the evangelical types are returning to anti-Catholic bigotry
Anti-Catholic bigotry in the right wing dates back to the 19th century when the right were hating Irish and italian immigrants.

10. That should go over well with the Catholic voters.
Ah but that is only 35% of the population. With a bit more effort Bettencourt (Loon, Tea) should be able to alienate the other 65%.

11. The One Moral thing the Catholic Church does, is care for the poor.
Do they think Mother Teresa devoted her life to helping golf pros?

On the other hand, I am kind of perked up that the Right has taken on the Catholics. They've been snug as bugs together over Women's rights, and now a repuke says this shit? Hah!

20. Ha! I wonder what my conservative Catholic friend has to
say about that one!

Infighting, lets get out the popcorn.

You don't have to scratch the surface to find the Catholic hate from the Southern evangelicals and holy rollers (I can't list every wacky protestant sect, my fingers will go numb). They hate Jewish people and Mormons too. Wait for that to come out again when Romney has his hat in the ring. They pay lip service to Jewish people because ya know, the chosen and all are supposed to get it first to fulfill their so-called prophecies.

I'm developing an opinion that Middle Eastern based religions are too intense and violent for most Westerners.
