Parent Says Public School Teacher is Forcing Religion on Daughter
A Kansas City, Missouri, charter school teacher is accused of bringing her religion into the classroom, and one parent says that when she complained about the teacher's behavior, it just got worse.

Derrick Thomas Academy is a charter school in the Kansas City Missouri School District, and the Missouri Department of Education confirms that it receives federal and state aid, and should therefore function as a public school. But Derrick Thomas Academy parent Ebony McGee says that didn't stop 5th Grade teacher Tariq Tutson from making religious comments in the classroom.

"When I asked my daughter what do they do for Black history Month, she said, 'Momma, we only learn about people that were Israelites', which I guess that's her religion," said McGee.

The Israelite Church views black people as the only real descendants of Israel, or Jews. McGee says that she keeps detailed notes about her complaints to the school. She says that after her first complaint on March 14, the situation got worse.

Then this week, the teacher sent home fliers with the students about the Israelite Church.

1. another reason why we don't need charter schools to "improve" education
they are either corporate rip-offs or religious training operations.

6. That's a fairly commonly held belief in some African American churches
I was in one for an event a couple years ago. I had never heard of this particular denomination but it's a popular church with mostly African American members. And the inside of that church was literally covered with Israeli flags. No crucifixes, no religious symbols I had seen at other churches. Only Israeli flags.

8. Interesting.
So charter schools also have the freedom to keep teachers that would be in trouble in the normal public schools.

You should check out Principal Diana Oshiro at one of the charter schools in Hawaii. She is a piece of work. Her Vice Principal is her sister who has a full time job as a flight attendant. She also hired her nephews right out of high school to be the Athletic director and the Film coordinator or some such thing. Nepotism at it's finest.

9. They're getting fired for everything else.
At least this sounds consistent with the premise behind public school teaching.

11. Doesn't sound like the school board can control that charter school.
