Old professions making a comeback: Canning, pickling, cheese-making and more, |
|
The sustainable food movement has inspired a return to traditional food crafts and preparation: canning, pickling, cheese-making, home brewing. Meanwhile, a similar trend has infused careers and occupations. These resurging professions can reflect a rejection of mass-production and indicate a move back toward more carefully considered and developed products and services. http://www.cnbc.com/id/40705778/?__source=otbrn%7Cpersonalfinance20110402185106%7C&par=otbrn

as far as our species' longevity goes and in contrast to a dark, corporate, techno-dystopia, then that article is pointing it out.
We may either choose to or, out of necessity, be forced to break away from the profit-obsessed corporate monoculture disease and go local and find out what sustainable is and if it is possible, considering our numbers today.
That's a long, hard road, but it does have some unexpected benefits.

6. there are people who are willing to pay a little more/or a lot more |

for things they know are local made/hand made/ unique etc. something that isn't mass produced.
what i hope for is that we see a return of small local businesses some day.
the thing with places like walmart is that their success isn't just based on being the cheapest but also about being the only available option to many people. and of course they are more likely to be in non wealthy areas since they can also try to win on low prices.
the scarves i have seen people make on their own and usually give as gifts are always superior in quality to even the most expensive scarves at high end stores. and this is true of many other things.

9. Another old career that I have seen is candy making. I went into the |
|
candy shop and they actually make their own candy on site. Yummy varieties. Best I have ever had.

12. Schmidt’s Candy - NYC |
|
I haven't been, but learned about it while watching New York Originals on PBS: http://www.nyc.gov/html/media/html/tv/nyctv_life_nyoriginals_episodes.shtmlhttp://schmidtscandy.com/Looks wonderful! My grandmother and her friends made candy/chocolates up in PA and damn, do I miss that. It's amazing the difference between a homemade caramel and the HFCS crap sold at Wal-Mart.

11. Never spected 2D animation to be in that list |
|
but as a proud 2D artist (and wanna-be hand spinner, flintknapper, calligrapher, and pin-striping noob), it certainly made me grin. Lets hear it for old-school!
