Promise Broken

"I will promise you this; if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. We will bring an end to this war!" -- Barrack Obama - Oct 27th 2007

IT MATTERS

I'm starting to think Bill Hicks had it right that newly elected presidents are firmly informed post-election of the true nature of the structure and advised if they vary from the status quo, they will suffer the JFK special.

2. I'm not necessarily in agreement with the JFK Special, but I DO think they're
made aware of the "realities" of their new job.

It looks so simple from the outside, but once in there I bet they're OMG! I had no idea!

The only ones I don't give a pass to are Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and their marauders - they knew EXACTLY what they were getting into and exactly what they were doing.

3. So, is he, in your opinion, a straight-up promise-breaker, or is the "JFK Special"
an understandable mitigating factor? Can't have it both ways.

Obama Gives Troops Timeline for Iraq War's End

By YOCHI J.DREAZEN

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Nearly six years after President George W. Bush first ordered troops into Iraq, President Barack Obama told thousands of Marines at a sprawling base here that the war would effectively end next summer.

Mr. Obama said roughly two-thirds of the 142,000 American troops now in Iraq will be withdrawn by the latter half of 2010, with the U.S. role in Iraq then shifting from combat to a more limited set of missions. All remaining U.S. troops will leave Iraq by the end of 2011, the president said.

"Let me say this as plainly as I can: By Aug. 31, 2010, our combat mission in Iraq will end," Mr. Obama said Friday to cheers from the Marines crowding a gymnasium here.

Let's be honest, Iraq isn't even on the radar anymore. Seems that most people accepted the CIC's revised timeline and moved on. Well, most of us. Obviously, there were mitigating circumstances that informed his later decision. He also promised that he'd be as careful getting us out, as Bush was careless getting us in.

5. which revised timeline? the one he promised, the newest one
he promised or the one he will promise when the deadline comes and goes? Oh and I'm a commie for asking. (Referencing the purity queens from other threads)

6. I can't predict the future, and neither (I'm assuming) , can you. The combat
mission ended when he said it would, and I have no reason to believe we won't pull out the remaining forces by the end of the year. Quite frankly, the American people aren't all that concerned with Iraq now. We're not hearing of daily casualties on the news, and pretty soon it'll be just another part of the world in which we have a sustained presence, like Germany or Japan.

11. Quite frankly, the American people want us to GTFO, and cut military spending and tax the rich.

15. And the Iraqi's have wanted us out since the famous 'purple finger' vote in 2005. It
is why they voted. :(

17. Out of curiousity, were you that generous
to Bush? If not, why not? Why do you believe one politician and not another?

As a corollary, what did you think about "conservatives" who continued to support Bush no matter what he did?

Hope that answers your question? :hi: I disagreed with the invasion, and Bush's handling of the war thereafter. I appreciate that an adult is trying to get us out, carefully. And, FWIW, I've always agreed with the mission in Afghanistan. Any more questions?

7. You didn't get the new memo? It was titled, "Guess what?"
I believe the modified timeline went like this;

New Projected Timeline - later.
