I never thought I would be ashamed of being an American.
byExplodingkitchen

......................

I am left a citizen of a nation where being a citizen of that nation means absolutely nothing, because so many of those citizens don't give a rat's ass about each other. Where sacrifice is something no longer needing to be shared. Where people have grown so used to the benefits of the nation working together as a collective that they believe the collective is holding them back, and damn everyone else in the name of some "conservatism" that couldn't even EXIST without the collectivism that came before it.

And where, God forbid, someone may believe something different than what is "tradition", or still feel that America is still a place of opportunity and are willing to risk their lives to come here and bring their families here to a nation ran by old white men who call them criminals, and because of this, they should be treated as something less than American -- less than human!

And that, my fellow Americans, is a goddamn shame.

I never thought I would be ashamed of being successful. And I am, because I don't want to be associated with the type of people that come to mind when I think of those that have found success and wealth in this country.

2. This writer needs to get out more.
Plenty of people are engaged in helping their fellows. The writer could become part of that.

7. There are never enough. But adding onesself to the list
is more worthwhile than saying that it's not happening and damning the entire society for it. I stand by my statement.

14. And you know the author of the piece is not helping others how?
It seems to me that you have no way of knowing what the author does with his time.

11. Ah, no. All of the people I know who are involved with helping others,
and that's a large group, are staunch Democrats and progressives. Of course they want better response from business and government, but they're not waiting for that to happen and whining about it. They're acting, not talking. About whom did you think I was talking?

It has nothing to do with any Bush.

10. Read the whole post. The author is talking about ReTHUGlicans and teabaggers
and the kinds of hateful, cruel legislation they're advocating and passing. And the hateful, cruel, selfish attitudes they live by. S/he's right (IMHO).

12. The answer to that is to elect better legislators. In the meantime,

there's stuff each of us can do. Simply talking anonymously about being ashamed does none of it.

8. oh how noble.
this is a piss poor piece. not that there isn't some truth to it- but crap like the author feeling morally superior to others who have found success is absurd. plus it's full of crap generalizations. there are lots of exceptions to what he/she is claiming.

13. THAT was an excellent read. Long and short of it to me is that we must
reign in the corporations! How? It's almost too much to think about this morning....yet.
