I just tried an e-cig. WOW!
Honestly it is a miracle. I never thought I could quit. I have smoked 1/2 - 1 pack a day for about 20 yrs. I tried to quit once (for about 6 hrs) using the gum. I became shaky, nervous, the dosage didn't go low enough for me. Anyway, i tried a disposable e-cig, to see if I liked it before I committed and I can't say enough about it.
I went from Thur to Sunday with this thing and only had 12 real ones, once i got the hang of it I haven't wanted a real one. I am not sure if I will quit but at least the tar and smell will be gone.

1. I've been using e-cigs for several months
and I absolutely love it. I probably couldn't smoke cigarettes anymore as the taste (depending what flavor you buy) is far superior to cigarettes.

knows people here don't go to McDonald's or WalMart - that is, if we were to believe all the posts that say they don't.

12. But they don't give a dose of nicotine.
You know that right? The e-cig delivers nicotine, with nothing else but a vapor? No second hand smoke, no smell, no tar...
And really Mcdonalds straws would be free.

18. Smokers have a permanently reduced sense of smell.
Edited on Sun Apr-03-11 06:32 PM by onehandle
There are even cases where they lose their sense of smell all together.

I have been around people 'vaping.' It has a candy-like, chemical smell with a taint of cat urine.

Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 12:50 PM by JuniperLea
And I quit over four years ago. I have a very keen sense of smell and taste... so keen in fact, that it rivals that of professional beer tasters. I'm also the first to smell smoke, rancidity, and mildew. I've also had to cut way back on wearing fragrances. My senses were fairly keen while I was smoking, but they are through the roof now.

24. From reading e-cig forums
It looks like it varies by flavor. RY4 smells for sure. One said he/she had complaints about "cotton candy" smell, switched to menthol and co-workers said they don't smell anything with that. I guess some do, some don't.

7. The thing that amazed me the most,
is how I do not NEED to have a whole cigarette at one time. It is just that once you light it, you just smoke it (because it is there and burning and because it sucks when it is put out and relit). But with e-cigs, you can just have the 5 puffs or so that you are requiring.

That is the part that screwed me up, so to speak. my mind was saying one thing, and you know.
When am I done? I'm used to holding this thing , now I know a few puffs, see if nagging feeling leaves, maybe a few more, done!
I didn't feel comfortable with it the first day because of that. I almost gave up, thinking "this sucks" but I thought about it. GREAT STUFF!!

Their house no longer stinks and it's much cheaper than what they were doing. They both say they felt better within a couple of weeks. Good for you. Keep it up!!

20. Just a little trivia note on ecigs
The vaporizing technology developed by the tobacco companies turned out to be so efficient that automotive companies licensed it for use in automobile fuel injectors.

Your car and you may be using the same technology.

I was skeptical, I thought about e-cigs for about a year. Did some research, talked to everyone I seen with one. I really hate the fact that I smoke. Considering all the options out there, the patch, gum, lozenges, and chantix they would never work for me. It is the whole routine, the physical act. This does reproduce it.

25. Welcome to vaping, tinkerbell41!
I started vaping last July, and haven't had so much one puff on a real cig since. I like these so much BETTER, there's nothing to "give up". I really prefer e-cigs that much more - like a choice between lobster and Spam; "giving up" Spam isn't hard to do. It's really this clear-cut...

27. E-cigs are pretty nice
I went from 2 packs a day to vaping in October, 2010. I can't tell you what a difference it made. I've smoked for the better part of 25 years, and found the transition to be very easy. My wife and kids are also happy that I was able to move on to vaping. My wife does occasionally catch a whif of it, but the flavors of e-juice do affect the odor. I have been able to use the device practically anywhere. I've yet to have a non-smoker walk by and offer up a fake cough of disaproval either. :)

The kit I purchased was through Volcano E-cigs out of Hawaii:

http://www.volcanoecigs.com/the-inferno.html

Unlike the smaller e-cigs that look more like a traditional cig, the Inferno gives me an all day vape with the supplied batteries. With the cost of the kit, and e-juice, I saved over $200.00 the first month I switched, and maintenance costs me maybe $20.00-$30.00 per month, depending upon where I order my e-juice from.

Good luck with vaping. I think in the long run, you'll realize the benefits. I know that my breathing has been much better since switching, and I no longer lack energy when attempting to participate in athletic, or strenuous activities.

33. Yes, you are correct
I remember seeing a youtube video where they disassembled the Inferno. 510 style battery if I remember correctly. They are wired a little differently (you can't charge an eGo with with the Inferno battery charger without frying the battery). I also like the passthrough for when I'm sitting at home in front of the computer.

I do not like the cartridges or the cartomizers though. They don't last long enough for the money. I just use a drip tip instead.

Still a little messiness (though a whole lot less) and not quite as much taste or throat hit, but I'm finding the atomizer is actually more reliable than the regular 510 and it's a whole lot less work and hassle. Just gotta cut any VG you use with a good amount of PG or it will clog fairly quickly.

I haven't had a problem with clogging after 6 weeks of use.

With the original 510, my personal space was littered with paper towels used for mopping up frequent flooding and those nasty bits of wet filler material.

But haven't committed to the tankomizer yet. I liked the clearomizer and cartomizers right up until the first cleaning. At that point, I could not get them to work as well again. I can get almost a month out of each atomizer. Throat hit and flavor are also very important to me. Do the tanks produce good TH?

I can't get the hang of dripping and don't have the patience. I use regular Boge and SLB cartos and am pleased with them. 89. Could you...
point me in the direction of these cartos? I'm looking for something compatible with my Inferno that actually takes a good cleaning and will not burn out. The biggest problem I've had with the carto and clearo is that the wick burns up, and I can't get a good draw. I also have to clean them after about 2 refills (still not bad for price). I like the clearo because I can see how much juice is left and I don't wind up dry buring them, but they just aren't very sturdy. A 5-pack lasts me a week.

93. The clearomizers once adjusted offer a decent taste, but when I adjust them
they eventually fall apart on me. Had to adjust them because of the burning wick taste. I also think that although you can see how juice is left, they're very unattractive looking, especially with darker juices. Reminds me of a swamp! lol!

I didn't notice any kind of side effects, except that I may have allergies that were previously hidden. I constantly find myself sneezing since quitting the analogs, and often have a really itchy nose. I don't know if that correlates to the e-cig or not. I haven't really coughed up much of anything. Far less in fact, than when I was smoking analogs.

48. that's the forum I used for researching my purchase
I wanted to buy an e-cig for my brother, who has struggled mightily in his efforts to quit, but I had no clue which brand to buy, so I went to that forum looking for some (hopefully) unbiased user reviews.

I noticed several people mentioned the Bloog MaxxFusion as having a "satisfying throat hit" -- I've never smoked so I'm not even sure what that means, but it sounded like it might be important. So I bought him the basic starter kit and a supply of assorted cartridges and just gave it to him yesterday. So far, it seems to be a hit! (no pun intended)

For the first time, I think he might actually have a real shot at quitting with this thing. The only mild criticism he had was that he had to get used to the weight of it in his hand (it's a bit heavier than an actual cigarette). I thought it was a good sign that after smoking it for awhile he reached down and pushed it into the ash pile of his ashtray without thinking.

Hoping against hope this works for him...

87. Please, please, please..take into account how many cigarettes he smokes a day.
Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 11:19 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
I smoked up to 3 packs a day and the regular 510s and 808's (MaxxFusion) are a pain in the ass if you smoke more than a pack a day. You have to change batteries out often. I'm presently using larger eGo and eGo type 510 threaded batteries that only have to be charged in rotation, once a day. And that is from a heavy vapor. If he's a 1-2 pack a day smoker, a larger eGo type battery can last over a day.

95. I have a Bloog, and I give it an A+ - an American (NJ) company too.

E-cig guru Leaford partnered up with an associate in China. Leaford has a big following in the "community" and lots of input from all went into improving the design over previous choices. It just came out last December. The cartomizers are a little more expensive than others, but they refill a LOT more times. The filling inside being very absorbent, they really hold a lot of liquid too, which means not only savings in extending the use of each carto, but refilling less often.

You made a good choice!

btw... I smoked 2+ packs a day for 30 years, and I've been vaping an 808 (the full name, KR808D-1 is what most 2-piece models are, meaning no separate atomizer) since I started vaping last summer. I love them.

When you get a little more familiar with it, get the tank system (eGo-T). You'll be set.

47. So, presumably there is already a market in THC-delivering e-juices?
Is the US e-juice market regulated the same way the tobacco market is?

96. Most non-newbie vapers make their own e-liquid, it's very easy to do.
And a lot cheaper.

No, not regulated, there was a big court decision about that last Fall, and fortunately vapers won that one. All the e-cig forums have a lot of info on it. Basicly in a nutshell - it can't be advertized as a means of quitting or as healthier, that would fall into making health claims and subject to regulation.

Big tobacco and big pharma desperately want to shut e-cigs down though - it cuts into their profits.

49. Please quit, those awful smelling things are terrible for everyone
If these E-cigs even help you to stop smoking for the just here and now you are still better for it. The bastards that sell those tobacco products know they are killing people and if you give them more money you are then helping them in shortening the lives of others. If not for you then at least please think about trying to help others in not getting the addiction.

57. Thank Pot Smokers for that invention
The "e-cig" is basically a nicotine version of a Marijuana Vaporizer, which was invented so that folks with throat cancer could get all the benefits from med marijuana....

And of course, the invention had many other practical applications...

so the best is still quitting nicotine, remember that chewing tobacco also gives cancer and no smoke is involved.

Surely nicotine alone is less harmful than nicotine plus all the other gunk? I don't know - what besides nicotine is in the e-cigs?

contain nicotine, and either propylene glycol (food preservative) or vegetable glycerin. The stuff used in fog machines, with a little nic to go with it :)

90. vaporizing means less, about zero cancer causing tar
and none of the energy robbing carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide.

your teeth will be whiter, your sense of smell will imporove, lung capacity will improve and your risk of cancer will be lower than if you smoke cigs but you will have higher cancer risk than a non nicotine user. also SMELL is not all that is important, it is still polite to go outside and vape because people are still breating in your cancer causing nicotine, they just dont realize it. When i vape weed i dont do it with my kid in the room just like i wouldnt smoke with her in the room because i dont want her getting second hand thc, with e cigs people still get second hand nicotine.

71. You can vap e-cigs with 0 nicotine......
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 07:14 PM by Little Star
I started 2 weeks ago yesterday and have had no cravings for a real cigarette. I get the cherry crush flavor with 0 Nicotine.

Also, my brand has no Propylene glycol (not even the approved to eat, pharmaceutical grade Propylene glycol). Plus Johnson Creeks smoke juice cartridges are made in the USA, (Wisconsin).

Check them out at blucigs.com

My grown kids HATE, HATE, HATE cigarette smoke. Refuse to be anywhere near it, even outside. I can now smoke my e-cigs right in their houses and cars. Mine have no smell, none, nada, you can't even smell the cherry flavoring.

Trust me, my four daughters researched my brand throughly before allowing me to smoke them near them and their kids.

People really need to educate themselves about what is and what is not about e-cigs.

Although it's true, not all e-cigs are created equal.

edit to add: I started smoking at 14 (min. pk a day) and am now 64. You do the math This is a big deal baby!!!!

74. I think that is because...
the chewing tobacco contains a high occurance of carcinogens, just like real cigs. The e-cigs may contain trace amounts of carcinogens, but not at the level of analogs.

There is not yet enough long term research to determine if ecigs are a healthier alternative. My opinion is that they are healthier only from the standpoint of taking in less of the cancer causing agents found in other forms of tobacco. No scientific proof of that though, just my opinion.

because of you, I started searching for info about e-cigs. Do you (or anybody?) know about Greensmoke? They look really simple....just a 2-part cigarette that the cartridge screws on the battery.
I may call them and see if they have a disposable to try first.
Thanks!

I am trying Smoke-tip. High ratings a 2 piece system and only 60 bucks for the kit. I started out with a disposable e cig called 21st Century Smoke. I know nothing about them, but it was pretty good. The 75.00 price tag kept me away.

Greensmoke cartomizers are impossible to refill. Although their batteries can be used with other KR808D-1 cartos, the threads are compatible.

GreenWorld makes a G400 which is pretty cool. It's 900 mah (3 times more powerful), lasts longer, and is thicker in diameter. It also can use KR8 cartos. The G400 cartos are expensive and taste like crap. They too are absurdly difficult to refill.

It's my understanding that Greensmoke and GreenWorld are affiliated, not 100% sure though.

* Almost all 2-piece e-cigs are "KR808D-1". I agree, the 2-piece are much simpler, and less expensive.

When I first popped a piece in I got naseus and the jitters as well. It was a nicotine overdose. After that I would only chew a little piece of the gum. If you need the gum besides the e-cig maybe you would want to try this.

68. Anybody not ready to quit but who wants a cigarette that is less objectionable
YMMV, but my husband has smoked Trues for 35 years and does not hack or cough, never has. They stink same as any cigarette and they are not cheap nor easy to find, but that has been his experience as far as the side effects.

About how much do e-cigs run per month, assuming a 1-2 pack a day habit? I'd like to get him on them just for the stink and the money. Oh, and the fire hazard, although he tries to be careful.

81. My Inferno Kit
Cost me 59.95 (bought once) and my juice costs me 9.95 per 30ML bottle. I go through about two 30ML bottles per month as a former 2pk/day smoker. I do have to replace atomizers as well (about 1 per month at 7.95), so I would say my total vaping habit costs about 27.00 per month. A single pack here costs about 4.95 in the military exchanges, so I save a considerable amount of money.

84. They're really good, aren't they?
I started on a $20 rechargeable Njoy from the 7-11 two months ago, not because I wanted to quit, but because I was moving into a shared apartment where smoking indoors wasn't allowed.

I still don't find them quite as satisfying as the real thing, but they're more than enough to take the edge off the craving every couple hours, and my cigarette smoking has been cut dramatically. A single pack of cigs lasts me at least 2 and a half days now, when it used to be 1 a day. I now cough much much less than my (non-smoking) roommate, and the difference in my bank account is even more dramatic.

The taste, the smell... just gross.

I ended up quitting using the patch, and was fairly well over the whole mess in two weeks. I'd been a smoker for over 30 years. And now that I am smoke free for over four years, those e-cigs annoy the crap out of me nearly as much as cigarettes.
