MARBLE HILL, Mo. (AP) -- A southeast Missouri sheriff plans to use a deadly showdown between a deputy and a growling dog as a training opportunity for his remaining officers.

There are other ways of fending off a snarling Chihuahua, Bollinger County Sheriff Leo McElrath says, than repeatedly shooting it.

"When I found out the dog that was shot was a Chihuahua, I really was upset," McElrath told an area news station.

The deputy, Kelly Barks, resigned last month after she was placed on administrative leave pending results of an internal investigation of the February incident that began with a domestic violence call.

(Kelly Barks is is real name!?!)

1. I told you guys a while back that cops shoot dogs as a matter of policy and expediency
And I was told that that wasn't the case.

I stand by my previous statement.

2. Indeed.

That has been my perception. Of course their own dogs are elevated to POLICE OFFICER.

When I was younger I spent 4-5 years living out of a backpack, travelling around the U.S. with a Black Lab named DeeDee.

I can say without a doubt that Law Enforcement threatend to shoot my dog more than once,in fact they use this threat to intimate the Owner into doing whatever they wish... "If I see you here again I'm Gonna be Mad,I don't wanna hafta shoot yer Dog."

Just what do they expect a dog to do? The door comes crashing in,some stranger is moving aggressively thru the house, for almost ANY dog from 5lbs on up This is "Switch On",Their space is being invaded, they do what dogs do...They Defend,They Attack.

4. In a lot of cases the dogs don't even attack,,,
They merely bark. Bang! End of story.

I imagine all that naked aggression from a vicious attack chihuahua was too much for the poor cop to deal with

6. Yep, they pretty much just bark.
That's why you see officers shooting "deadly" labs, golden retrievers, etc. They feel threatened by the barking of a dog who's rightfully defending their home.

10. I think there's at least one case of a dog that was shot
by police during a raid while it was IN A CAGE or crate or whatever you want to call it.

9. I had one of those bull cops approach my dog which I tied to
a bike rack before going into a convenience store. It was sort of a routine for us. We would both get our exercise, then I went in for a drink which we both would share if we needed it. Like I said, it was a routine. You saw me and my dog heading for the convenience store and you knew what we were going to do. I would tie her up for not more than the 3 to 5 minutes it took me to retrieve the drink and get back. She whined and barked when I was gone (I think she was abandoned as a pup) and I hope to get her confidence long enough to break her of that habit. However, she's a sweetheart and would pipe down if anyone gave her attention.

So, one time this bull cop approaches us as I tied her down. "Do you mind if I pet her?" I said, no, she's friendly. When I got back the cop said my dog growled at him. I knew he was lying. My dog has never growled at anyone under those kind of circumstances. She doesn't even need a sedative when they clip her nails at the vet. But I saw his agenda.

I stopped taking those walks when we tried to go back again and I saw him and his buddy waiting on a side street waiting to give out speeding tickets. I saw him just as he looked at his buddy, said something, then they both headed off in the direction of the convenience store.

That was it for me. Incredible the number of ways these people try to curtail your outside activities.

7. When UPS shows up one of my dogs barks and growls ferociously. You'd think that he thought the ups
van was some sort of monster. The barks get more intense and more ferocious when he sees the driver come to the door.

When I open the door to accept the package, he sometimes (like he did today) dart out the door and proceed to lick and press against the driver for a petting.

If this was a cop and not a ups driver, the dog could be shot. I have security cameras with audio at my house. If I replayed the video it would probably look like shooting the dog was justified.

We need to disarm this country and including the cops. Like they do in the UK. When they need firepower, they call in a special officer.

8. Maybe one day cops will get effective flashlights and dog recognition training
the flashlights they carry today are ineffective, and their dog recognition skills are worse. If you can't tell the difference between a Chihuahua and a pit bull, you need a desk job.

Tell me a dog like this could threaten anything but a hot dog?

13. Yep, that's what it's all about
two of my male friends told me that I was crazy not to get the cops to come over and investigate when an intruder tried to break into my house late one night not long ago. WILLINGLY invite the cops over to my home?? I don't think so, I'll take my chances with the intruder!

15. Outrageously cruel..
she even followed the little dog around and shot it twice more. This female deputy's actions would seem to contradict the argument that the world would be all peaches and cream and less violent should women be totally in charge..

Doesn't seem to matter what gender, just give some people authority and the power to enforce it..and sit back and watch the abuses start..
