Wacko fundy screams "this is evil", tries to destroy painting of women with breasts showing
A painting at the Gauguin exhibit at the National Gallery was attacked last week by a gallery visitor, a rare and unusual incident that provoked considerable commotion, according to other museum visitors and gallery officials.

Screaming “This is evil,” a woman tried to pull Gauguin’s “Two Tahitian Women” from a gallery wall Friday and banged on the picture’s clear plastic covering, said Pamela Degotardi of New York, who was there.

“She was really pounding it with her fists,” Degotardi said. “It was like this weird surreal scene that one doesn’t expect at the National Gallery.”

Gallery spokeswoman Deborah Ziska said no damage to the 1899 painting was immediately apparent after the 4:45 p.m. incident. But she said a more thorough examination will be conducted Monday.

47. According to a PK I knew (PK being a preacher's kid)
fundy adolescent boys live for National Geographic each month. My friend told me that most families he knew would not subscribe to NatGeo because of the photos, but most of his fundy friends had friends whose families did and the fundy boys got their booby fix at their secular friends' houses. As a last resort, they would go to the library, but nobody liked to do that because you couldn't take the magazines home for a shall we say, intimate perusal.

25. Actually the native woman didn't dress like that when they were painted.
The fundies got to them long before Gauguin made it to the islands. By the time he got there they covered their breast.

12. there's no mention that she was screaming that.
the article says she was screaming that "this is evil". No specification of what she believed was evil. Look, she could be a fundy who found naked breasts evil or she could be a nut who believed the women in the painting were fixing her with the evil eye.

41. let's get real.
Given the way-out-of-proportion freakouts certain segments of our society have when faced with human sexuality, I think it's a solid bet that it was the boobies which set her off.

'course, she might have been a disciple of Andrea Dworkin instead of a fundy, but the latter is probably more likely.

19. How do we know most things? Thru inference.

Yes, maybe she was protesting that the women depicted weren't white.

Maybe she was protesting the fact that she finds "mediterrenean-type-nipples" offensive.

Maybe she was protesting nudity.

It all comes down to probability, and yes, your usual absolutism is warranted, we don't know fore sure yet. Then again, we won't know for sure ever, since there's the whole epistemic conundrum with other peoples intentions. So here we are again: Probability.

Thanks for maintaining those high standards of causality, though. You might find them rather tricky when applied to your own writing one day.

30. Of course....
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 11:47 AM by Democracyinkind
Given the facts it is the most likely explanation; given more facts that could change; as I have pointed out from the beginning.

Why be such a brat about it? Ah, I forget....

A neutral reading of my post would have informed you of the fact that I agree with your assessment. In these kinds of situations, humans tend to make inferences based on probabilities; deny that if you want to. I have stated what I find the most probable explanation; and I have explicitly stated that the probabilities I have lined out are not absolute.

As I said; maintaining those absolute standards of causality in the way you just did is basically denying the way the human mind functions.

What I simply don't get about you is that you snark most of the times, even when I so obviously take a non-confrontational stance when replying to your posts. I could speculate about that, but you just proved how futile that is... lol

Most inference-denying skeptics are frauds by the way; Pyrrhon wasn't killed by a carriage, that is just a story to illustrate the point made at the beginning of this sentence.

Make sure not to trip over those standards of yours when your writing is concerned, that's all I'm saying.

Why I always end up arguing with you even when my posts agree with what you've written is beyond me.

Should really see some of those Virgin Mary and baby Jesus paintings from the Renaissance. Surely a few show a glimpse of a breast or so.... Not to mention "David" and the works at the Vatican.

Idiot. I hope no one shows her those old National Geographics. :eyes:

Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 12:13 PM by hlthe2b
I've known my share of moronic AND crazy-ass extremist prudiish women (can you say Phyllis Schafly?) so I'm not that surprised.

On edit, I see I made the error in my original post (edited) to suggest it was a man. Ironic, since I read that it was a female and actually had a Schafly-type female pictured in my mind's eye as I was typing the post. I guess my brain just refused to process a woman being so ridiculous about breasts (and art).... Geebus. ;)
