Massive McJob Creation: McDonald's to Hire 50,000 People In One Day

In a statement Monday, McDonald's said they plan to hire up to 50,000 employees in close to 14,000 restaurants nationwide. Oh, and they're going to do it all in one day.
April 19, to be exact. On their first national hiring day, they'll raise their U.S. workforce to 700,000, a hiring that will cost them an extra $518 million on wages and salaries in both crew and management positions. According to the release, the average wage for new employees will be $8.30 an hour, more than a dollar above federal minimum wage.

but a lot of young people who need some income to help pay for community college or help out with the family income will probably appreciate these jobs.

I'm not defending McDonald's, and I eat there maybe once every two years. But it's better than no jobs, and they seem to be trying.

Yes, not a solution, but something is better than nothing, and since so much of this is about "confidence" I think even "deceptive" increases in hiring can have a possible mushroom effect.

...to McDonald's for this. Sure it's not the best job in the world, but at least McDonald's as a whole has it's head in the right place. 50k jobs in a single day will be rather impressive.

Today I am a cynic. If "average wage" is $8.30, and they are hiring management as well as crew, oh man I am a skeptic today

it's better than a lot of corps are doing, which is little to no hiring at all.

If every major corporation did 1/3rd of what McDonald's will do, I'd say a nice chunk of jobs would open up.
Not a solution no, but as the jobless rate goes down, even deceptively, consumer and business confidence go up, and more real jobs get put out there IMO.

6. This must be true since it's the third time I've read it here today.

I know this story is looked upon as a joke here, but jobs at McDonald's are what they are and I don't think anyone who is honest would claim their jobs to be ones where somebody could work and raise a family. Lots of teens and retired people work there. I have a 19 year old goddaughter who would be more than happy to get one of those jobs. Plenty of people have started out working at McDonald's and have gone on to much better things.

for that. At least that's how I read it. Forget the fact that no one could live on that kind of wage or the reality that these are more than likely part time jobs.

12. I once worked at McDonalds long ago. It didn't pay a really living wage,

but I like to work. You learn something from every job no matter whether your job is viewed as respectable or not.

McDonalds benefited from the Fed bail-out.

As the eternal skeptic, I do have to ask how many people McDonalds will fire as they hire these new people. I also have to ask what it means about the nutrition in our country is McDonalds is hiring.

Last time I ate at McDonalds I became ill afterward. It could have been a coincidence but I haven't gone back.

I have to add that I have a lot more respect for people who work at McDonalds than for some of the folks at hedge funds and some of the banks.

$8.30 an hour is a shit wage. You can't support a family on that kind of money.

This is nothing more than a ploy to gain popularity. This is not a long term solution to the economic issue.
