$5,000 PER DAY offered to work in the Fukushima Nuclear plant

They say the plant authorities are dangling cash carrots of up to US$5,000 (S$6,300) a day to act as "jumpers" - so called because they "jump" into highly radioactive areas to quickly perform a task before fleeing with minimal exposure, reported Reuters.

But even at those rates, many candidates are turning the workdown.

"My company offered me 200,000 yen (S$3,000) per day," one subcontractor in his 30s said.

"Ordinarily I'd consider that a dream job, but my wifewas in tears and stopped me, so I declined."

Similarly, Mr Ryuta Fujita, 27, told the Tokyo Shimbun newspaper he was offered US$5,000 to go into Reactor 2, but likewise declined.

"I hear that guys older than 50 are being hired at high pay,"MrFujita said.

"But I'm still young, and radiation scares me. I don't want to workin a nuclear plant again."

regardless of health care? If they were heavily radiated would they not also be risking their families? Even with that kind of money they have to find people who are both suicidal and altruistic.

10. Depends on just how much radiation they absorb which depends on two things

How hot things are where they go and how long they stay there. The data exists regarding how much you can absorb in a given time and be safe. Those tables are all over the internet. The question is, is the company telling you the truth about how hot things are at given points in the plant. If I was sure they were and we could calculate the numbers correctly, I'd volunteer.
