Ah... The arrests are starting. That is a VERY good thing. If you haven't been following the news in the UK, Rupert Murdoch has been slowly buying up all the news outlets there and then using them to hack the phones of left leaning government officials and then using the info to push them out of office. THere have been bribes, police payoffs, police coverups, HUGE lies by Murdoch's ilk and million dollar payoff checks (probably) signed by Murdoch's son. (Who just got a "promotion" to the New York offices....just in time to get out of England before, perhaps, the whole situation blows up in his face.

HAS MURDOCH'S PAPERS BEEN HACKING US OFFICIALS? What do you think? ALL of his English newspapers were hiring investigators to hack into phones, THOUSANDS of phones. And anyone they wanted. A girl who got raped had her phone and the phone of all of her close friends and mom hacked, actresses, actors and politicians...anyone Murdoch wanted the dirt on. One investigator had 6000 or so phone numbers and PIN numbers in his office.

So...if it was so easy in Britain...what are the odds they were doing it here?!

From the article in the Guardian UK: "The former head of news and current chief reporter of the News of the World have been arrested on suspicion of phone hacking, sources said.

Ian Edmondson, 42, and Neville Thurlbeck, 50, were held by Scotland Yard detectives when they attended separate police stations in south-west London by appointment this morning."

Criminals usually stick to a tried and true or comfortable modus operandi, if he did such a thing over there, I see no reason as to why he wouldn't have done it here first, as his media conglomeration in the U.S. preceded that of his takeover in the UK.

It's not a sure bet but I would be willing to take a wager on it.

Thanks for the thread, Snoutport.

21. Why would Fox need to hack anyone?
The News of the World needed to hack into people's voicemail so that they could write true stories. Pointless celebrity bollocks of no importance, yes, gross invasions of privacy, yes, but broadly true in most cases.

Why would you need to hack into anyone's voicemail if you're just going to make shit up?

(I'm not saying the NotW didn't make shit up too, but that's mostly not the stories the voice mail hacking was for).

semblance of objective journalistic credibility down the river on a daily basis became standard operating procedure to obtain its' political ends, why do you believe such a morally bankrupt institution would stop at just "making shit up?"

Would such an institution be open to using political blackmail from information obtained via hacking politicians' voice mails?

I believe it would.

I just hope the investigation comes here to the USA.

That this is how they got Colin Powell to go before the U.N. and give that speech to the U.N. about Iraq having WMD. Bullshit? Maybe. But it is interesting to ponder how much political behavior has been the result of somebody having information about somebody else.

Paranoia?
The feeling that you can control things (even those you can't)?
The need to crush your opponents?
What else?
Absolute power (or the thought you have it) corrupts absolutely.

"Rupert Murdoch has been slowly buying up all the news outlets there and then using them to hack the phones of left leaning government officials"

Um, that doesn't make any sense. Now if he had been buying up Vodafone Group, Deutsche Tele or BT it might make a little sense. If he wanted to "hack phones" he's got the cash to have that outsourced without needing to hire "reporters" to do it.

Furthermore let's suppose you had little or no scruples when it came to projecting your political point of view and any opposition was indeed the enemy, would you be willing to coerce them in to submission or at least into looking the other way.

I imagine in the case of Murdoch, he would be and tapping their phones to obtain dirt for blackmail purposes could very well fill that need.
