FL GOP Senate immigration measure passes amid cries of "let us speak" from opponents

Sitting in front of a crowd that included children of immigrant workers -- some clad in "Don't Deport My Dad" t-shirts -- a Senate panel on Monday swiftly pushed through a controversial immigration bill.

The Senate Judiciary Committee took up the first hearing for SB 2040 by Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, at the tail end of their whirlwind, two-hour meeting. ..... The bill would require all employers to check new employees' immigration status using either the federal E-verify or the enhanced ID cards that have been available in Florida since 2010, for which proof of lawful residence is a requirement. The law would go into effect July 1, 2012.

At the press conference, Florida Immigration Coalition Director Subhash Kateel stood with about 40 Homestead-based immigrants who'd come to speak out against the bill.

"Quite frankly, I've been called, in the last days and weeks, words that I wouldn't want my son to ever hear," (Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami) said. She said that while it would be easier not to deal with the immigration issue, senators felt it necessary because the Obama administration had promised to handle it and didn't.

The crowd booed as the bill passed through committee. Though Flores tried to move quickly to another bill, their chants of "Let us speak!" drowned her out, so senators quickly adjourned and left.

Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami and her hard line compatriots do not give a rat's behind about immigrants or any other everyday people in Florida.


While Floridians struggle to find work and stay in their homes, these hard right wingers running our Legislature are busy flogging immigration and other inflammatory social issues as hard and fast as they can.

Guess what, it ain't about the helping the economy or regular people with this bunch. EVER.

1. If you aren't a Republican, you are an immigrant.

Wait till decide that voting is a problem for 'wrong thinking' Americans.

2. Of course, an UNLIMITED number of Cubans can just come here and be instantly legal.

No matter who they are, no matter their prior criminal record, no matter how they get here, if the make it to the US they get instant work visas, instant Social Security, medicare, medicaid. unemployment, food stamps, preferred eligibility for Sec. 8 housing (with an income exemption), and instantly eligible to file for a green card within 1 year - under the Cuban Adjustment Act.

PLUS, aforementioned Cubans are the only class of US residents and citizens that can simply hop on a plane and travel back to the Cuba they "escaped" from for a vacation and visit - over 100,000 do every year - while the rest of us non-Cubans remain 2nd class residents/citizens ... still travel banned from Cuba.

Caps on immigration do not apply and it is not necessary that the applicant use a family-based or employment-based immigrant visa petition.

Two other immigration rules are also waived. Unlike other immigrants, Cubans are not required to enter the United States at a port-of-entry. Second, being a public charge doesn't make a Cuban ineligible to become a permanent resident.

Sorry but we need to deal with it. Now is a good a time as any what with record unemployment for legal Americans and all.
