April 4tth is the aniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. To many younger Americans this is just another day. For workers and labor this is not another day. Martin fought for workers rights, and for civil rights. Martin was on our side. He was on the side of the people. Today we are reminded of that fight.
Today in San Diego anywhere from 500 to 800 people came to the Civic Center to listen to Union Organizers speak of that history. We also heard about Pharaoh and how some of this has not changed, the tyranny that is. Finally people lit candles.
We shall overcome, not surprising, was sung. And people are reminded why the battle has again been joined. This is no joke, but the battles of the past are the battles of the present. Sanitation workers were under attack at Menphis, and Sanitation workers are under attack in San Diego. Things do not change, not as long as we forget our history.
These are among the best photos from the rally. I try to make an effort to bear witness to these events. Why? We need to document them. Why? Our so-called liberal media will not.
