In today's overheated, mile-a-minute news environment, it's easy to get bamboozled.
Maybe it's a politician trying to advance an agenda by offering an argument that sounds good but doesn't hold up; maybe it's a corporate spinmeister putting out a line that does as much to mislead as to inform; maybe it's a public official trying to dodge blame through the use of selective facts. But whatever the source, it's clear that there's a whole lot of misinformation floating around out there--and that the media can't always keep up with it all.
That's where we come in. Today we're introducing Closer Look, a regular feature where we'll take claims that have gotten attention lately, and assess just how well they stand up to scrutiny. Then we'll assign each claim a level on our fancy-looking gauge, which runs from "air-tight" to "bogus."
