Hey news organizations! The name of the country is "Côte d'Ivoire" not Ivory Coast....
The name officially changed in 1985. I think that's enough time to learn to say the name correctly.

"The region, and then the country, was originally known in English as "Ivory Coast". In October 1985, the government officially changed the name of the country to Côte d'Ivoire."

"Despite the Ivorian government's request, the English translation "Ivory Coast" (sometimes "the Ivory Coast") is still frequently used in English. The BBC usually uses "Ivory Coast" both in news reports and on its page about the country. The Guardian newspaper's Style Guide says: "Ivory Coast, not 'The Ivory Coast' or 'Côte d'Ivoire'; its nationals are Ivorians". ABC News (USA), The Times, The New York Times, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation all use "Ivory Coast" either exclusively or predominantly."

2. It may be the official usage, but I don't think it really makes much
difference which European colonial name is used.

8. But what about what the people there want?......
I don't live in a place called "The Colonies", I live in the United States.

But I take your point, and hate to be pedantic about it. But its disrespectful to ignore what people who live there want, even when its something as simple as what to call the place.

5. Well, China is officially Zhongguo and Belgium Belgique

But that's not what we call them in English.

There are few countries for which we use that country's official indigenous name.

And in Côte d'Ivoire I bet they don't call the United States of America by that name, but rather use "Les Etats-Unis"

18. Gotcha ...
But that's the whole point everyone on this thread is trying to make: we translate almost all country's names into English, just as other countries do in their languages. We're all just trying to say the OPs premise is, well, silly.

10. we can say Cote d'Ivorie
right after we start saying Bundes Republic Deutschland and Muenchen.

Put that in your Peking duck and smoke it.

Probably half of the people in THIS country don't say Pierre the way the people of South Dakota do. (hint, it's not Pee-air)

12. And Finland should be Suomi, and Ireland Eire.
The list could go on forever. Côte d'Ivoire translates to Ivory Coast in English. In France, the United States is Les États-Unis, too. It's common practice for each language to call other countries by a translated or other name. So it goes.

14. LOL, Seriously?
You do understand that countries are often not refered to by the full, national title, right?

We don't call North Korea the Democratic People's Republic of Korea do we? It's commonly refered to as North Korea. Just like we didn't refer to the United Soviet Socialist Republic by its "long" name, we called it USSR or Soviet Union.

FFS, the things people get upset about. You must have gobs of free time.
