Hey news organizations! The name of the country is "Côte d'Ivoire" not Ivory Coast....

The name officially changed in 1985. I think that's enough time to learn to say the name correctly.

But that's not what we call them in English.

There are few countries for which we use that country's official indigenous name.

And in Côte d'Ivoire I bet they don't call the United States of America by that name, but rather use "Les Etats-Unis"

中华人民共和国
Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó

People's Republic of China is just an English translation of that. Just as Ivory Coast is an English translation of Côte d'Ivoire .

The list could go on forever. Côte d'Ivoire translates to Ivory Coast in English. In France, the United States is Les États-Unis, too. It's common practice for each language to call other countries by a translated or other name. So it goes.
