Messaging, messaging, messaging!!!

KOCH BROTHERS LOSE

Wisconsin Democrats Pre-Celebrate Kloppenburg Win

Posted Wednesday, April 06, 2011 1:13 PM | By David Weigel

In a conference call organized by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Wisconsin Democratic Senators Mark Miller and Chris Larson were nearly ready to congratulate JoAnne Kloppenburg on winning a seat on the state Supreme Court.

"This is a very significant victory," said Miller, "regardless of the outcome."

As they spoke, Kloppenburg led the vote count with a few precincts still left to tally. That freed up Larson and Miller to speculate about what would happen if she won.

This is a total Wisonsin smackdown of Scott Walker

Prosser should really understand it is time to leave the stage.

Prosser sticking around is just hurting Wisconsin.

There is serious businesss to conduct and Prosser is just gumming up the works by trying to challenge this.

12:37pm: Great news - those "missing" two precincts in West Allis (suburban Milwaukee County) were either empty or already counted. So MKE is done and Kloppenburg's vote lead remains unchanged at 224. Now we just wait for Lake Mills (JeffCo) to count. And then, of course, on to the absentees.

1:52pm: Amazing fact from the National Journal:
If Kloppenburg's narrow margin holds up through the potential recount, it will be just the fifth time a Wisconsin Supreme Court justice has been unseated since the court's establishment in 1852.

.................

Updated AP numbers (11+ / 0-)
Total 3629/3630

Prosser 739,043 50%

Kloppenburgh 739,379 50% -- the Winner

"Proud to proclaim: I am a Bleeding Heart Liberal"

.......................

No automatic recounts in WI (4+ / 0-)
The loser has 3 days to ask for a recount. If the margin is less than .5%, the state has to pay for the recount. So in order to get the recount, he'll first have to acknowledge he lost.

18. Actually I don't either...........
It's just an opinion, but I think that there were some voting shenannigans going on just to keep it close. In a fair count, Kloppenburg probably won comfortably.

8. Wisconsin Supreme Court Election: Kloppenburg ekes out victory; Recount more than likely
The last remaining Wisconsin precinct in Lake Mills has apparently split roughly 700 votes in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race down the middle. That split allows JoAnne Kloppenburg to keep a margin of somewhere between 220 and 230 votes above incumbent Justice David Prosser (there are conflicting reports as to the precise number, but they all fall within that spectrum). The next step is very likely a recount. According to News 3 reporter Jessica Arp on Twitter there is no automatic recount trigger in Wisconsin and it needs to be called by a campaign. Arp adds "if vote within one half of one percent (about 7,000) cost of recount will lie with the state/counties."
With cost of a recount not a factor for the Prosser campaign the recount is very likely. His campaign has three days to make the request. Any recount attempt is sure to draw parallels to the 2008 Minnesota Senate race between Al Franken and Norm Coleman. Franken came out of the final count with a 225-vote victory.
In the February 15, 2011 primary for Wisconsin Supreme Court Prosser received 54.7 percent of the vote. Kloppenburg only managed 25.2 percent with the remaining 19 percent being split between Joel Winnig and Marla Stephens.

13. I wonder what changed between 2/15 and 4/6?
:-) Very interesting - looks like at least 10% of the voters in Febriuary had buyer's remorse.

9. Shouldn't have been this close.
I would hope that the absentee ballots reflect a lot of motivated voters who wanted Kloppenburg and wanted to make sure their vote wasn't monkeyed with.

11. I feel that way too
With all of that rage, it should have been a landslide. This is certainly not a "resounding smackdown" of Walker.

17. Must be close to 700,000 multi-millionaires in Wisconsin.
Or maybe 700,000 anti-socialists.

I find it fascinating that we turn out 100's of thousands in demonstrations while the other side needs an astroturf organization to herd a few thousand to demonstrate for Walker...yet the results show how evenly split this state is. I guess crowd aversion / agoraphobia is a real issue for Republicans...even around people who share their political thinking.
