School Buses Could Soon Display Ads

ORLANDO, Fla. -- It is common to see advertisements plastered on scoreboards at high school sports stadiums. Someday, those same ads could appear on the sides of school buses as a way to generate more money for education.

"I think bus advertising is a very creative way for districts to use free-market principles to raise money to meet transportation needs," said Orange County School Board Member Christine Moore, who has been urging Florida legislators to change the law that currently bans school bus advertising.

If approved, 50 percent of all revenue from the bus ads will go toward school district transportation. Ten percent would be earmarked for driver education programs. The rest of the money could be spent on other school programs.

"As a marketing major, I guess I can see the benefits of raising money if it goes to the right cause," said parent Jeff Stafford. "As long as they're tasteful ads and it's not anything that's going to upset any parents, I think it will probably be OK."

2. How long until our cars become billboards?
Our clothes?
Blind consumerism is destroying this country.

with logos. If they live in a desirable area a corporation is targeting. I forget where I read about this.

6. I don't see a problem with this. My publicly funded MTA buses already have ads. nt

8. Maybe the Baptist Church or Plan B or Right to life or...
the Army or Alcohol or possibly Bible verses! It is different than public transportation IMO. These vehicles carry only minors and they don't need to be bombarded with any more crap than they already are. And as usual who will decide what the message is?

9. Good. Saves the taxpayers money.
I've probably received a dozen emails about this and whileI find it kind of gross, I really don't see a big problem here. And as much as school budgets are being cut, what ever it takes to bring in some money works for me.

10. My school district has been doing this for a couple years.
Ads are only on the left side of the bus, and advertisers are carefully screened.
