Harper shrugs off accusations his campaign is being anti-democratic

MARKHAM, ONT.—Stephen Harper brushed off charges Wednesday that he was stifling democracy by making his campaign stops Conservative-only events.

The Tory leader has been hit by a raft of incidents in which people whose partisan loyalties are suspect have been kicked out of rallies in London, Guelph and Halifax.

Overzealous Conservative campaign organizers have also drawn Harper’s RCMP security detail into the matter, leaving the force to reprimand its officers for overstepping their responsibilities, which is strictly to protect Harper from physical threats.

“The RCMP assisted the party organizers in restricting access to persons not registered for the private event,” the force said in a written statement to the media. “This was not in accordance with the RCMP’s mandate and RCMP members have been reminded of our responsibilities.” ..............(more)
