1994: Republicans win control of the House, and a narrow majority in the Senate, during midterm election in President Clinton's first term. Heralded as an epochal election that would forever change the face of Congress. Late 1995-early 1996: House Republicans, demanding deeper budget cuts, shut down the federal government.
2010: Republicans win control of the House, but not the Senate, during midterm election in President Obama's first term. Heralded as an epochal election that would forever change the face of Congress. Early 2010: House Republicans, demanding deeper budget cuts, shut down the federal government.
Almost exactly the same circumstances, the same game of chicken.

3. 1995 was a good year for me. |
|
96-99 weren't too shabby either.

11. It's not whether it was a good year for you |
|
but that here it is, 15 years on, and they are trying the exact same tactic, and they expect no one to notice, and expect no one to notice that most of the folks who are now intent on reducing the size of government were perfectly fine with increasing it from 2001-2008.

4. So by that timetable... |
|
Obama wins in 2012, more divided government in Washington, and Republicans will steal the 2016 election.

12. Not trying to generalize it that far |
|
It is interesting, though, how the GOP congressfolks become so deeply committed when they have a majority in the house and a Dem in the White House. The last time folks voted in a Republican House in the first term of a Democratic president, they tried the same thing. Now they are doing it again and expecting no one to notice.

6. I don't remember it being that bad |
|
when the pukes shut it down in 1996. What I did like was Newtie got the blame, this time it's on Boner.

7. And I don't think Boner will last as long as Newt did. |
|
Newt made it another 3 years. I see Boner gone by next year.

10. The point isn't that it was bad for you |
|
But that the political circumstances are very much the same and they are doing the same thing. I wonder if they expect different results?
