Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes northern Miyagi, Japan
It just happened a few minutes ago. I felt it 200+ miles away. It lasted for about 45 seconds. It is reported as a 6+ seismic intensity on the Japanese scale for northern Miyagi, which means there might be considerable damage.

13. According to NHK News
there is a tsunami advisory out, with waves reaching 1 meter in height, and maybe several times higher than that in some places. :scared:

Edit...the information just popped up.

7.4 Magnitude. 40 km deep. 98 km from Sendai.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/at00ljadqj.php#details

This was a little closer to Sendai than the last one.

That's the last thing they need!

This got linked to the wrong message somehow. I was trying to respond to Generic Other's message about a tsunami expected to hit Fukushima.

27. Apparently, that is fairly shallow for an undersea quake
The 4.7 offshore quake that happened just after that was about 42 miles deep

One shallower than the other and the shallower one is way closer to Sendai. Hmmm...

32. Heard on TV that an initial wave came in already. Hopefully it will stay small.
CNN (I think) was interviewing a man over in Japan by phone and he said his hands were shaking and he wouldn't be going back to sleep tonight.

Art, I am over in the midwest of the US and the night I saw the tsunami I had a very hard time sleeping myself.

You are in my prayers. (really)
